I heard that the Carolina Cubs won the Dynamic End of the Summer World Series at ECU/Pitt C.C. this past weekend. Does anyone have any details? I saw where the Dirtbags participated so I was kind of surprised not to see any posts from Coach May and/or SouthernNo.1. Just curious. Thanks.

    Glad to post

The Dirtbags 07's were supposed to play in the event but several of the guys are right on the verge of having to report to college and wanted to skip this one. So I took 2 of the 07's a couple of the DB 08's and got on the phone and made some calls. I picked up some great guys that can really play the game. Bryce Grady 08 SS North Lenoir HS , Thomas Moore 07 1B OF Wilson Fike ( Pitt CC ) , Jacob Davis 08 OF Wilson Fike , Dillon Cockrell 08 3B SS Rocky Mount , Sam Snipes C OF 07 Oxford Webb ( Methodist College ) , Zach Woodley 07 P Northern Nash ( Pitt CC ) , Seth Simmons 07 P Calvary Baptist ( ECU ) , Travis Horn 08 C OF Northern Durham , Tyler Hanover 08 2B SS P East Forsyth ( LSU ) , Jeff May 08 C South Granville , Bentley Massey 08 P Wilson Fike , Jim Leggett 08 P OF Rocky Mount , Ryan Waldrep 08 P South Brunswick , Alex Pearce 08 C P OF Nash Central , Josh Darroach 09 P 3B South Granville.

In our first game we played the Copperheads Coached by my good friend Coach Steve Evans from Roxboro Person HS. The Copperheads started McEachern (Sp?). Simmons went five innings and we were down 4-3 after five innings. The Copperheads went on to beat us 8-4. They hit the ball very well and outplayed us. We left a ton of guys on base and just could never get the big hit at the right time. The Copperheads have a very solid team and are well coached. Travis Horn was 2-2 and Josh Darroach was 2-2. May and Hanover and a couple of abs with runners in scoring posistion but did not deliver. The Copperheads earned the win by outplaying us.

In our second game we played the Hurricane's Sr team. Zach Woodley got the start and went two innings giving up one run. Darroach came in and pitch the final 5 innings and did a nice job. Collins went the distance for the Canes and pitched very well. The final score was 6-3 Canes. Cam Freeman hit a bomb and had at least a couple more hits. The Canes got another HR but I dont remember the young mans name. I dont keep stats in summer games I just go by memory the best I can. The Canes are an outstanding team. That Freeman and Maness kid can flat out play the game.

In our third game we played the Barons I cant remember where they actually were from. Jim Leggett got the start and was outstanding through five innings. He gave up two runs and we were up 6-2 when he came out after 5 ip. We got some timely hitting from several guys in the order with a 3 run HR by May and a triple by Jacob Davis. Also Hanover had a triple. The Barons scored four runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 6-6 and then we scored three in the top of the 7th to take a 9-6 lead. Bentley Massey pitched a scoreless 7th and we got the win. May was 3-3 with a HR DBL Hanover was 2-2 with a triple and Davis was 2-3 with a triple. Sorry I dont have any names for the Barons but I didnt know any of their kids.

In our fourth game we played the Stingers from NC. Ryan Waldrep got the start and went three innings. He did not give up any runs and looked very good. We got some big hits from May and Hanover again with May hitting a 2 run HR and a 2 run DBL. Hanover had another triple and a single that scored a run. Bryce Grady had a big DBL as well in this one that scored a run I think. Alex Pearce pitched the 4th and 5th innings and did not give up any runs. Hanover came in and pitched the 6th and 7th and allowed one run. We went on to win that game 6-1.

We had a great time playing some baseball. Several of these kids I have coached and coached against over the years. It was great to get together and play. One of our guys was offered by a D-1 school after the event. Another guy was approached by a D-1 school and they were talking to him after one of our games. This was great.

I rarely post on showcase games if ever. But since you asked Im glad to give the information the best I can remember.
We had a great time playing the games. I got the chance to see the Cubs play some and they looked good as usual. I understand they beat the Canes to win the tourney so congratulations to the Cubs.

By the way I did see a first for me in a showcase game. During the game with the Barons, Jeff May was intentionally walked. That is a first for me. I cant offer any other details because after we played I got out of there and to a place that was alot cooler as soon as I could. bballady if you have any details about the Cubs or anyone else feel free to post them.

    Thanks Coach 27

Thank you Coach 27 for posting the updates from your Dirtbags' games. My son, who will graduate in 2009, has been approached by numerous Showcase teams for the fall and we are trying to figure out which team will give him the best opportunity to be seen, the best team he will fit in with, and which team is the most successful. As an observer of this board for the last three months, I sincerely value what is posted and the intentions being stated. Thanks again.

    Cubs win! Cubs win!

The showcase tournament was great and as for me I prefer this type of showcase where the teams are playing to win a championship. I feel the scouts/coaches get to see the kids perform with something on the line. As for the intentional walk to Jeff May (i was the umpire at the plate) it was well deserved cause the kid was launching balls all over both fields, ECU and Pitt. The Cubs played excellent ball all weekend with very good pitching. Congrats to them. My only regret was not tossing Coach 27 for not sharing any gatorade with me in the 100 degree game.

    Copperhead Results

The Copperheads had a good weekend at ECU/Pitt CC... Our results were:

    Friday: Copperheads 8, Dirtbags 4
    Sat: Copperheads 15, Stingers 18's 4
Sat: Copperheads 8, Augusta Barons 5
    Sunday: Hurricanes 5, Copperheads 1
Monday (Semifinal) Hurricanes 5, Copperheads 4

Overall we played well and just couldnt pull it out against the Hurricanes in the semifinals. The Cubs played really well and congratulations to them on winning the tournament. It was a well run tournament and the additions to the facilities at Pitt CC (pressbox, locker rooms, etc...) are awesome!! Not to mention the facilities at ECU...

While the intentional walk is unusual, it does pay a strong compliment to the kid. Obviously the opposing coach was trying to win the game.

No doubt about Jeff's abilities and the threat he poses at the plate, but to intentionally put him on in a showcase??? Aw come on now??? Let's be real. College coaches dont weant to see intentional walks, they want to see if he can perform in that situation, or if the pitcher can perform in that situation.... It seems to me that an IBB at a showcase tells a college coach yo udont think your pitcher can get him out... IMHO

    You didnt get it???

I personally sent you several ice cold gatorades a cold towel between innings. It must have been swiped by the catchers. By the way you were outstanding behind the plate. Very consistent and on top of the game. Our guys really liked the way you called the games. Too many times in showcase ball the umpires seem to be trying to get the 21 outs as soon as possible and move on. Great job!!!

    you the man Coach May

thanks for the nice note Coach. please give Andy (and others) a reference on all our umpires as our group has been doing most of the showcase events in the 3 state area and we would love to do the Dirtbag (and other) events when needed. we have 20 certified college/high school guys and i personally rotate the guys so all teams can get different looks each weekend which i think leads to better umpiring. next time get tossed with 2 outs to go and i will meet you at the pub afterwards for a good laugh. one thing you do is keep the kids loose and that to me is great coaching.
