I would like to see what thoughts are out there on NC HS's going exclusively to wood bats. (Im not saying it will happen. I just want to see what people think of the idea.)

I am a supporter of exclusive use of wood bats however I don't know everything. Please generate as much discussion as possible.

Most baseball enthusiasts know that is much more difficult to hit with wood bats. Also the ball won't go as far.

    Other points:

Today's metal/composite bats don't hit much different than wood bats.

Wood bats can be custom made for the individual hitter(no not juiced! Tapper, handle, etc.)

Wood bats are much cheaper. (I would suspect that bat companies want us to continue the use of $400 bats.)

Make the change BEFORE someone is killed. It will probably happen soon in college and when it does then everyone will gnash their teeth and put ashes on their heads. Everyone will be screaming for a change. Why not stand up to the bat companies before that happens and say that player safety is more important than your profits.

Someone was recently killed..................but with a wood bat. It was a 35 year old former professional ball player who coached for the AA Rockies.

As sad as that was, thats really the only guy I have heard of dying from a ball hit by a wood bat. I am sure it has happened before but thats a first for me. But with guys getting bigger I think it is safer for everybody in college to use wood bats. A wood bat will seperate the good hitters from the other. This will in turn give scouts a chance to see who can handle a wood bat and who can't. I think high school can stay with aluminum but when they hit the college ranks; I think they should switch to the wood bat.

Anybody who says aluminum bats make the game better are wrong, its the players who make the game better.

Think that is the ticket. How many players that the Majors draft can crush the ball with aluminum and cannot get one to the warning track on the ground with wood. Need to look at which wood can be used. Maple or Ash. Is bamboo wood or a weed??? I say weed. WOOD IS FOR A TREE!!!

I respectfully disagree. If that's the case, then this wouldn't be an issue.

I've watched 2 summers of wood bat college baseball....& I'm amused at how difficult some kids find the transition. The first 2 weeks, bats are sawed in half by the score. Even when the kids figure out how to get the barrel on the ball, home run production is down. And check-swing hits are almost nil.

I like it but college teams need to take the lead on this and make the 1st move. Doesn't make sense for NCHSAA to go this route when college goes in a different direction.
