I saw pitchers, batts and wheels, catchers all being mentioned and I thought it would be good to start this thread as Conference player of the year would highlight the overall top players from each conference. I know the SW4A so I will start with them. Please add to it or from different conferences.

Jordan Darnell- A.K committed to Elon, probably the top velocity in the SW4A. 6"4 RHP/1B
Tyler Pilkington- Weddington, committed to UNCC, heard in a local paper he turned dowm offers from NC State, UNC and Va Tech to join 49ers. One of states top two way guys, LHP/1B
Richie Schaeffer-Providence, arguably the top 09 prospect in the state, made JR Olympic national team, tremendous power double didgit HR guy and will probably be relyed on to anchor the pitching staff this year.

Those are my top 3 candidates, here are two more that can be in the hunt.

Will Helms- Providence, committed to App State, great speed, plus arm, solid leadoff man and will be a tough LHP on the bump. super athlete.
Chris Fogelman- Weddington, under the radar guy that has tremendous power from the right side can play anywhere. A strong RHP mid-upper 80s

    Staying in the SW4A...

Grand Slams Greg Lawson: '08 catcher from Providence. Solid behind the plate with a rocket of a right arm. At one point last season was 2-2, 2 HR's and 8 rbis (started hot with two pinch hit grand slams). Played behind Shackelford, but could have been in the mix with Crump as the best backstop in the conference if he had gotten his playing time. I would assume Greg will be the Panther's starting catcher I'd expect very big things.

    PAC-6 POY

I would have to say that the early favorite would have to be the reigning POY in Steele Myers from Jordan. This MINF is a player and the fact that he won it last year has to make him the front runner. There are many other candidates that can wint it with excellent seasons, but Myers batted over .500 with I believe 8 HR in Conference games.

Look for some very good players to give him a run though.... remember it is just Sept.

Who would be the Pre-Season top 5 Pac 6 POY candidates other than the Myers kid?

I would have to say Steel Meyers (Jordan), Bryan Bass (Northern), Lee Murray (Jordan), Tyler Robinson (Northern), and Craig Farmer (Northern). Don't know much about the Person Kids. Kahlin Villines (Riverside) has a chance if he stays consistant and also their talking about knee surgery for him. Also look out for D.J. Thomas and Jack O'Rouke to start making their names known this year too.

It's funny that you mention some of these guys... Personally speaking I see some fine talent in this mix of players.
Myers (JOR) - like I said before, a legit POY candidate.
Murray (JOR) - Excellent OF, Left handed stick, very good spped, excellent lead-off hitter for the Falcons.
Farmer - (NOR) - Potentially an extremely lethal hitter, good body, aggressive and good base runner.
Robinson (NOR) - Was the best pitcher on Northern's staff last year. Made many appearances last year, but seems to have a durable arm. Has good stuff and will be very solid for Northern.
Bryan Bass (NOR) - THe first time I saw this kid as a freshman, I thought this is a pretty darn good player. Later that summer I saw him at a showcase in Wilmington and became more impresses with him. He is a very solid infielder and will be an excellent college player. Good swing and good range defensively.
O'Rourke - (NOR) - good player, have seen him a couple of times and know there is potential there to be a very good player. Time will tell on him.
Villines - (RIV) - Very talented player... Could develop into a very good player.
DJ THomas (RIV) - Good outfielder, another left-handed stick with good speed for the leadoff spot.

AS far as Villines (Knee injury?) goes... I saw him on WRAL's Football Friday highlights catching a TD pass. His knee looked fine in that catch and run.

In talking about the Person players that I coach, I am fortunate to coach great kids.... for me to single one out as a POY candidate right now, well I have made mention of on in an earlier post that I feel is a pretty good player in Jeremy Peed (OF). I do have some other returning players that could have great seasons for us. Trey Davis (C), Craig Reid (OF), Ricky Crabtree (INF), Christopher Morgan (LHP), are a few that could have really good seasons for us. I guess somebody else other than I needs to evaluate whether any of these are legit POY candidates. I dont wnat to tout one over the other, let their play speak for itself. Developing into that type of player means you have to be instrumantal in the success of your team (usually at the to of the conference). There is alot of time between now and the end of the 2008 season for that to happen.

Pac 6 Player of the Year (Only a 4 Horse Race)

    Steele Myers SS/RHP Jordan
    Craig Farmer SS/RHP Northern
    Jeremy Peed OF/RHP Person
    Blaze Tart OF/RHP Riverside

Offense- Myers, Farmer, Peed & Tart will all be at the top of the conference in Average, RBI's, Hit's and Extra Basehits.

Pitching- Myers, Farmer, Peed & Tart will all be at the top of the conference in Wins, ERA and Strikeouts on the mound.

Defense- All 4 play great defense, have great arms and are leaders on their teams.

All the before mentioned players are good players! But none contribute overall in every aspect of the game like these 4 players do. These 4 players are not just hitters, not just a glove, not just a pitcher. All 4 do everything well. A betting man would put his money on Steele Myers, Craig Farmer, Jeremy Peed or Blaze Tart to win Pac 6 Conference Player of the Year.

I thought the same thing but I was at the game the week before and that was the word going around. Could just be an excuse for moving him from QB.
