I'm very suprised she was able to 'accumulate other offers" as I thought girls who had verbally committed were considered hands off by other schools. For you to have other offers, did you speak with other coaches after committing? If so why? You had already committed. Maybe the Wisconsin coach heard that you had been talking to the other schools after committing. This kind of thing can really upset a coach.

Once a young lady makes a commitment, there shouldn't be any reason whatsoever IMO, that she should speak to any other school. If she feels the need to continue talking to other coaches, then she needs to withdraw her verbal commitment. The same goes for the college coach continuing to recruit for the same position.

I hope this isn't the case, but it's amazing how this kind of thing will be known to the college coaches. Even though they compete, they seem to be a pretty tight group.

Again, glad things worked out for the best.

    Wisconsin

Just to clarify things, I think there are 2 different stories here. The committment to Wisconsin by Maleah was at all time honored by Maleah and she neither took any offers or looked for any others. She is 17 and that is mostly what was so devastating for her. She had the offer for 9 months during which time she only played ball but did nothing to dishonor her part of the committment. She verballed in Oct 06 and they withdrew in July 07. Not leaving much time to recoop.

The only possible, sane reason is that it's the school of her dreams. The reason for a school to verbally commit to a 14 yo....the crazy part is the coach may not even be there by the time the student enrolls

I really didnt know that you could withdraw an offer(unless of course the player had a tough injury, which is not the case here).

a 14yr old committing is a bit on the insane side, imho, but braves does have a point, chances of that coach being there in 4 years is questionable at the least.

They may still be able to. A school never knows who will transfer, who will quit and who drops off because of grades.

But here are a list of questions that makes the process unique for each family:

Education- Does the school that offers the scholly offer the type major your DD is looking for?

"Dream" school- is this the school your DD has dreamt of attending all her life?

"The right fit"- Does your DD have a realistic chance of playing?

This is why the prevailing advice is always to attend the school that if you no longer played softball, you would still want to finish college there.

    or

Go where you feel that the coaches really want you. Where you feel you have the best opportunity to play.

Things beyond one's control can affect one's softball career (Coach getting fired, over-recruited your position, lost interest due to the special commitment to balance classes and getting up at 5:30am each day to practice)

    Getting back to Marlin's question:

Most of the best offers are made during the early commitment periods. Most schools, especially D1's, want to finish their recruiting in the fall. BUT....things happen. Players recruited can't make the grades, home life forces them not to be able to attend college, players get homesickness even before they leave for their freshman year....players quit!

So, sometimes the greatest offers can come in the late spring, early summer. I am not recommending for anybody to wait that long, but for those that did not receive offers early....don't fret. There can still be a lot of money left on the table for you to gobble up.

A verbal is a verbal, nothing more, and it works for both, player and coach, if you are familiar with recruiting, you know that a verbal means that in most cases you do not visit other Univ. but, we all know that does not hold true, for example say a universityl has a total of 22 scholly's to fill, it you check close enough you will find they may have made thirty offers. and this is to fill in for the loses they from experience know is going to happen, so more than likely out of the 30 offers, it now is close to the 22 that were available.

I know that most of you will say, this was not the case, but it happens in softball all over the nation just as it does in fb, bb, or any other sport.
Remember that if the players chooses to withdraw her committent where does it leaves the Univ. I know of one Univ. that in basket ball recruiting since the end of last season has had committments from at least four players that changed there mind....

Glad it worked out for the young lady

Know of two schools in the charlotte area that had two girls each that verbally committed and never showed. put both of these schools in a bind, but left the door open for some local talent which worked out nicely.
