Anyone want to share what their booster club does for the baseball program? Should each sport have it's own support groups? Should Athletic Directors be head coaches of any sport and also be on the booster club board?

The schools I have been affiliated with all had Booster clubs...they also have Baseball Booster Clubs. They were fantastic because of the leadership involved. Great communications, good cajoler's and were motivated.

Freda White, at Hopewell HS, is an excellent example of a booster club leader taking charge. There isn't anything she won't do to achieve whatever needs the baseball program has.

Ardrey Kell is an exception. Although they have an excellent Baseball Booster Club, for them there is no limit to Coach Bagwell's needs. As soon as he decides he wants his Bagdome...it will be built.

The difference between Providence and AK is that Coach Hignight at Providence doesn't want a dome. He wants to play all his games outside. But he is thinking about moving the school so he can bring homeplate back further.

But I have learned this; to have a great booster club, you must have a great leader for a coach.

    Butler booster

Butler HS only has an athletic booster club. The board and members consist of volunteer parents only (no coaches). Our AD typically attends our meetings and brings requests from the coaches for approval and sometimes funding. Each team can do their own fundraising and spend the proceeds anyway they wish. They can (and often do) ask the booster club to supplement.

Our baseball team recently benefited from the booster club approving and coordinating a new backstop.

This could lead to some interesting conversation.

In Guilford County I don't think AD's can be head coaches. I could be wrong on that. That's what my coaches and AD tell me. I understand an AD can be an asst. coach in Guilford County.

Our Booster Club is dysfunctional when it comes to raising money. Most of income comes from concession sales in Football and that money goes in to the school general fund so nobody knows how much it is. Plus the local Civitans run the concessions and they keep half the money and the school gets half. However they do a good job. The money they keep goes back in to the community at places like the YMCA and other community projects. They buy all supplies and provide all the labor. They do a good job and work hard.

Basketball concessions go to the band. Baseball concessions are worked by baseball parents but not sure where the money goes.

Teams are not allowed to have their own fundraising but some stuff goes on anyway. Baseball gets more done than any group at our school through lots of volunteers and donations. Baseball has raised well over 20k in the last 2 years and had donations over 20K in materials and supplies. Our wrestling also raises some money on their own. We had some parenst in the last two years that have done a great job. Their kids have now moved on to play in college.

The Booster club does a reverse raffle that raises about 12-15k. I do not know exactly where the money goes other than booster funds.

Being an independent business owner I can honestly say I have never seen anything as dysfunctional as our booster club. Great people in the club but no authority. What that leads to is people with means and the desire to work going off and doing things on their own for the school or program. Good intentions but not very functional.

Let's have a good board meeting

My guess is this is the norm.....and I bet either the squeeky wheel sport gets the money or the sport with the most political clout!!!!!

Oneputt is dead on with our dysfunctional booster club. Has to be one of the worst in the state. The people who actually want to get something done are hamstrung by the folks who just want to talk about it. Baseball parents have done 95% of the work to raise the funds but yet are questioned when they want to spend 50% of the money on baseball.

Typical meeting has about 7 baseball folks, couple of soccer, maybe a swim team mom, couple of lacrosse guys, no football.....no basketball.....no track.

But determined folks will prevail and RHS has one of the nicest facilities around.

Having served as President for a year. I did learn a lot. When there is something to do you do it. When you need funds you go get them. When you need help you do it. If you want to get fundraising ideas you do it. Get the deal. YOU DO IT! Because more than likely no one else will.
