    Coach Flowers Update

Not much to report. No word on when he will come home. Fike has moved the JV coach (Jay Wheeler) up to assist and keep the winter workouts going. We simply don't know if Coach Flowers will be OK in a month, 2 months, 6 months, or when. Still having speech problems and possibly some effect on his legs. Will keep you informed. I never knew Coach Flowers had so many friends as he keeps to himself most of the time. If I see him this wekend, I'll let him know people are pulling/praying for him. Thanks to everyone!

    Update

Saw Coach Flowers this past Saturday (1/19/08) at Pitt Hospital. In good spirits, speech still a little slurred, and not very mobile. Will start physical therapy either today or yesterday. No word on release date. I'm not a Dr., but I can't see him in a Fike uniform coaching once the season starts (2/26/08 scrimmage with East Wake). I think it will be awhile, but I do think he will be involved in decision making just not hitting the fungo or coaching 3rd base for awhile. He had this look in his eye that I can only categorize as concern (fear of the unknown) which is expected when you have a life changing event such as a stroke. I shared with him that there is alot of good baseball people from around the state that are pulling/praying for him and he is extremely grateful. Will try to keep you updated.

    Congrats to Jacob & Bentley

A pair of standout Fike seniors, landed the top 2007 individual awards presented by the Wilson chapter of the Hot Stove League during its 32nd annual banquet Monday evening in the Bill Ellis Convention Center.

Senior outfielder Jacob Davis earned the Clint Faris Memorial distinction as Wilson County's top amateur baseball player in 2007.

Senior right-handed pitcher Bentley Massey II claimed the Red Barrett Memorial Scholarship.

Davis, a three-year starter for the Golden Demons, owns a .325 career batting average, including a .386 mark last season -- when Fike won 21 games and advanced into the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A postseason.

He performed at an even higher level for the Wilson American Legion team, batting .485 and being proclaimed the co-Most Valuable player. Davis ended the season with a 26-game hitting streak.

Massey posted a 9-3 record and 2.28 ERA last season. In 76 innings pitched, the right-hander struck out 76 and walked 16. He also ranks No. 7 academically in his class and was a marshal last year.

I bet Coach Flowers is very proud of them.

    Stretchy's post

On behalf of the Davis and Massey family, thank you so much for the post/acknowledgment. It means alot! Stretchy, I guess I owe you a steak at Beefmaster! I already owe Q one. Might as well get Braves back and if Coach 27 can ease up from attacking everyone on this board (just kidding, love you Kenny), we can invite him too. Jeff will need to stay home though. To big of an appetite!

The sad thing is Coach Flowers had prior knowledge of his 2 guys getting awards and he had told both of them he would attend the banquet. He had his stroke last Tuesday and was unable to attend. Oh well, baseball is life and life ain't always fair.

Will keep everyone updated as best I can.

    Two fine young men

I dont think I have ever had any more fun coaching than I did this summer during the ECU tourney. Having Jacob and Bentley on that team sure was alot of fun. They are both outstanding young men and great baseball players. Congrats to both of them for earning these awards. These guys are two of the reasons Fike will have another outstanding season this year.

I attended the Wilson Hot Stove Banquet. This was my first Hot Stove event, and it was very enjoyable. Guest speakers included Jerry, and Johnny Narron. Trot Nixon was on hand to present the , "Trot Nixon Gamer Award" to Josh Hamilton. Several college and high school coaches were in attendance including Billy Godwin, Elliot Avent, and Mike Fox. Very happy to see Bentley and Jacob receive recognition for jobs well done on the field. Both those guys have been performing at a high level for Fike since being thrust into varsity spots in their freshman year. Wilson Fike made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs last year, and they only lost one starter. Look out!!

Thanks for the kind words Q. I also appreciate you not mentioning the fact that they still have not been on a Wilson Fike baseball team that has beaten Rocky Mount! We are 0 for 4!! Again, thanks! Call me.
