In “The Next Level” forum there was some information posted regarding the academic and economic value of the colleges in NC. There are 15 public 4 year colleges in NC. A large percentage made recent national rankings for quality and value. I thought that it might be of general interest to HS parents so here is a summary of what was posted.

PRINCETON REVIEW'S 2008 REVIEW OF COLLEGES
The Princeton Review rates each school on a continuum for purposes of comparing all colleges. Ratings were based on Admissions Selectivity Rating, Fire Safety Rating, Quality of Life Rating, Academic Rating, Financial Aid Rating, Professors Interesting Rating, Professors Accessible Rating.

Princeton Review's 2008 America's Best Value Public Colleges

    Top 10 List:
University of North Carolina at Asheville

    Others listed:(in alphabetical order):
    Appalachian State University
    East Carolina University
    North Carolina State University
University of North Carolina at Greensboro
University of North Carolina at Pembroke
University of North Carolina at Wilmington

    Princeton Review's 2008 America's Best 366 Colleges (Public & Private)

On the List - in alphabetical order:
    North Carolina State University
University of North Carolina at Asheville
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
University of North Carolina at Greensboro

KIPLINGERS 2008 RANKINGS OF BEST VALUE COLLEGES
The Kiplinger rankings were based on cost of attending, SAT scores, student to teacher ratios, graduation rates, and other criteria for instate students attending public schools (they also had a ranking for out of state students):

#1 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
    #13 Norrth Carolina State University
    #27 Appalachian State University
#36 University of North Carolina at Wilmington
#40 University of North Carolina at Asheville
#68 University of North Carolina at Greensbor

THE 2008 FISKE GUIDE TO COLLEGES
The 2008 Fiske Guide to Colleges gives you a list of colleges and universities that qualify as BEST BUYS based on the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.

    Public Institutions – North Carolina
    • University of North Carolina at Asheville
    • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Based on the Princeton, Fiske, & Kiplingers reviews you can see that North Carolina is indeed blessed with the ability to get a quality education at a reasonable price. Easy to see why so many ball players from out of state want to come here to play. Add in the weather and the people and its no wonder it is so competitive to get a spot on a local roster.

There were also a number of NC private schools on the lists – in the private schools listing - but I just didn’t have time to run through them.
