South Hurricanes land a fine ballplayer

Breaking News - CB Aycock 2010 Shortstop Connor Narron will be a Hurricane in 2008. Narron started every game at shortstop for CB Aycock during there AAA North Carolina State Championship run a year ago as a freshman. Canes Head Coach Jeff Petty stated "Connor is going to be a huge asset for our program for years to come. He is a slick fielding switch hitting shortstop with as good a baseball IQ as anyone his age in the country. Narron makes any team signifigantly better right away with solid actions in the middle infield and swings with power from both sides of the plate, and we are ecstatic to have him on board. In our eyes he is hands down the best shortstop in his class in the state of North Carolina, and possibly the best one in the state period." You can see Connor all spring manning shortstop for CB Aycock High School.

The above comes from the Canes website.

    Baseball Fever

SoutherNo1 took me to my first ever ID camp today at SSS. I had a blast. Of course we had to stop at a Bojangles as soon as we got to Smithfield. Anyway I got to hang out with some old good friends David Edgerton and Jerry Narron. David's son Will led my 12u Stretchlon Stars team to a State Games championship a few years ago and Jerry was a live guest on the 4 year anniversary of the Stretchlon Sports show a couple years ago.

Freddy Suggs was there scouting the kids for the MLB bureau and he taught Q and myself some neat things that the scouts look for. Parents would be shocked at some of the things. Mike Joyner was a great host and he shared some good stories of Jay Cox.

Jeff Petty, Doug Collins and the staff were very thorough in the work out of the kids and the drills were excellent. I would say 50 kids were there.

The only things that surprised me were that "Boomer" Dad could not throw a batting practice pitch to save his life, luckily Randy Blue was ready in the bullpen or I might still be at the field right now.

BUT the worst thing of all was what oldbbguy did at the event. It is so embarrasing that I will not post it. If you really want to know send me a PM. Thanks for having us guys.

Tomorrow we are going to visit Andy and the Impact ID camp at East Chapel Hill HS.

    Great Day For Baseball!!

What a beautiful day yesterday for baseball and fellowship at the Canes camp.I enjoyed meeting SoutherNo1 and greatly appreciate you keeping Stretchy on a short lease.
Stretchy, it was great to see you pal but realitive to the so called most embarassing thing that happened, remember what Sheriff Andy used to say,"ole what a tangled web we weave, when at first we do deceive".

What a great day for baseball! Was great fun to see some old friends and to make some new ones. :sunny:

These are always well run and you get to see some very talented players show off. You know what this means though...opening week will be raining and about 35 degrees.

Hey Stretchy. Those 50yd times, I mean 60 yd times were blazing weren't they? Just kidding oldbbguy. Thanks to the Canes staff and the SSS supporters for giving us an early dose of baseball before the "official practices" start in one week. It was good therapy for all of us baseball people after all of this cold weather we have had.

    False Advertising

Troll now that you opened pandora's box.. here is the deal. oldbbguy wanted all kinds of national records set at the camp since he heard that ESPN would be doing a story on NC players in the next few weeks. So he set the marker at 50 yds instead of 60, anything hit out of the infield was recorded as a home run, the mound was set at 54 feet so that all but one pitcher threw in the 90's and 8 guys hit 100, and if that is not bad he promised to cook steaks but instead he had ham & cheese sandwichs with expired labels.

Today he had the guts to call me and ask me if Mr Freddy Suggs was going to recommend any of the players for the MLB draft in June. If not for the respect that I have for his beautiful wife Trish I would officially delete his number from my cell phone.

Troll, it was really great seeing you again. Best of luck this season.

    50/60 times

It was nice to meet Stretchy and SoutherN01 at SSS on Saturday. You are correct about the 50-60 times but you failed to mention how they figured out the times were off. When Stretchy and SouthernN01 ran the 50 at just over 14.4 and 14.6 respectively they knew the tape was to short. According to oldbbguy they have never ran a 60 in under 15.3 so something had to be wrong. Must be the bojangles slowing them down. It was a great day to be at the field and the folks at SSS are great host. I'm just wondering when oldbbguy is going to share the great news with everyone.

    It was all good,

thats for sure!So many fine baseball people there and all were in their element.Stretchy had to leave about the time we cranked up the grill, his better half called and next thing we know he is stuttering, making up some tale to her about the camp being delayed because Jeff Petty and Freddy Suggs got into a fist fight. Then poof he was gone!Earlier Stretchy was checking pitch velocities with a juggs gun when suddenly we realized there was something wrong with the numbers he was calling out.We looked over and saw Stretch was gunning the cruising speeds of a flock of black birds! You gotta love him!!!!!!!!!By the way hitittome thanks for asking,we probally will do that this coming week.

    A Special Thanks

I want to say how much we appreciate Coach Joyner and the folks at Smithfield Selma for the hospitality and letting us hold the camp at their facility. Coach Joyner was working on the field at 7:30 in the morning trying to get it ready for the camp (and he did) and we certainly do appreciate that. The field was wet from Fridays rain but Coach had it in great shape by the time the event got started. We had a great turnout and what a great day for baseball in February. It could not have been any better. Ol Strechy himself was even there along with oldbbguy. What a crew. You guys are 1st class. Thanks Again.
