My DD played multiple sports in HS. After going through the college experience there is no way she could handle 2 sports in college. The conditioning and practice takes all her time and then throw in academics. If a person tries 2 sports at a D1 school my guess is that they would eventually end up hurt and probably be on the injured list most of the time, thus, benefiting no one, herself, coaches or teammates. It's possible in HS because you don't have the conditioning and weight lifting. You go to school and have practice after school and then go home. Not that simple in college. If you are on scholarship THEY OWN YOU.

i started this thread just to let everyone know about megan and hopefully get some well wishes for her, and i'm glad i did. i beleive her parents did the right thing talking to her as to what sport she wants to pursue after high school, and we know that answer! i beleive that the girls that want to, need to play both sports up to a certain level just to see where their heart is and what sport they want to pursue in college. its just hard to see some of the girls that put in so much time into something they love, which is softball, to go out and risk severe injury playing basketball in high school..and that's jmho! maybe they should focus on the one sport, wether its basketball, softball, soccer, etc... if they're wanting to pursue a possible scholarship playing in college. but like i said, this is just my opinion!
anyway, basketball is almost over and then "let the games begin"!!:taz:

Before I anger basketball lovers everywhere, let me say that I have always thought basketball was too physical especially for a girl that is small like my daughter. I think that there are referees that control the game and there are referees that do not. This particular game had only one referee because the other referee went to the wrong school so instead of two idiots they started the game with one. I do agree with the statement of stick with what you do best and don't risk not being able to do what you are good at and what you love to do for something that doesn't mean that much to you. For my daughter softball is what she loves to do and what she does best. She now understands what we have been talking about and how easily life as she knows it can be drastically changed in a split second. My daughter always thought things like this happened to other kids and not her. I, as a mother, did not enjoy the 100 mph trip to the hospital not knowing if my child would have permanent injuries or not. High School Basketball and some of the idiots that referee it are not worth it to me anymore and I will never regret encouraging my daughter to give up basketball. I do realize that she may get hurt doing anything but if I can eliminate one thing where there is a strong possibility that she could have a life threatening injury I have no problem doing it. I don't know what the statistics are but I would be willing to bet that kids receive more injuries from basketball than any other sport. Again, I am not a basketball hater, well never mind yes I am. I'll say this, I have no problem with multi sports in high school as long as one of them is not basketball.

I have been in the insurance industry for over 30 years, most of that time managing injuries. Made a number of friends that were physicians and learned a couple things from them. Girls, ladies, young women, whatever term you want to use are far more likely to have knee injuries than their male counterparts as they do not have the same muscled area around the knee as men and "normally" do not have the leg strength overall of the men.
As we all are aware, basketball requires every kid to run, jump, cut, come to quick stops, excelerate, dive, and have physical contact on a "hardwood floor"! Many times the contact comes while the young lady is in the air! Sometimes it comes with another player running at full speed right into the chest of a player. Sometimes it comes as the two hit knee to knee! Volleyball also has the jump and possible contact but certainly requires diving and constant jumping. All of these activities have a high risk for knee injuries as well as other type problem.
Now all the items I mentioned could happen in softball. However, jumping is an exception not a rule and U are jumping off the ground and not hardwood and most likely, 9 other people are not right around U. U can be struck by a softball, U can slide into a base and tear up a knee or ankle, U can slip on wet grass or mud, or hang a cleat.
Point being made, injuries can happen in all sports! Injuries can happen at home, at school in car, in pool so why add to the chances of injury! JUST MY OPINION, parents and kids have to make a decision that fits their needs and I certainly understand the HS pride, etc. I played three sports but with my size, I never had to worry about college money, haha.

    glad she is ok

Austyn enjoyed playing with your girls last summer in Florida, and speaks of ya'll often. She too plays a sport every season and it has always worried me.With basketball being the scariest,a major contact sport if you ask me.She liked basketball because it conditioned her for softball following it.She did agree to stop playing basketball after her soph. year,(this year) and do training at gym in winter.she is not willing to give up volleyball, yet, she loves the game.Megan is a very talented ball player and we are grateful and happy for her that she will be ok and ready for ball season. We send our love and prayers. GO STINGS !!!!!!!!

I Think The Bottom Line Is----

Listen Guys / Girls it's not that kids can or can't play multi sports, if that's what they want to do that's their prerogative as a kid. The issue here is it smart to stretch yourself thin?? Can you honestly give whole-heartedly to each sport 100%?? I do believe there are a few kids that can excell in more than one sport, and that is GREAT , but in reality why are they doing it? Now let me ask you this question you have signed to play collegiate ball in whatever sport, why would you risk an injury to yourself by playing another sport and possible losing your scholarship if you had obtained one from a university ?? I just don't understand that decision..

    Thanks, Guru

My DD has been a starter for three sports since she was in the seventh grade. She has been a starter for Varsity Volleyball, Varsity Basketball, and Varsity Softball since her freshman year in high school. She also did travel volleyball and softball. Softball was her favorite. It was her dream to play softball in college. It is now her senior year of high school and she no longer has that dream. She has been contacted by several colleges for all three sports but she no longer wants to play. She is burned out on sports and just wants to be a regular student. She says if she had stuck to softball only she would be playing in college. Softball was her life. She loved the game. Of course we are disappointed but the choice is hers. Four years ago if I could have forseen the future I would have discouraged her from playing so much. She enjoyed what she was doing and won a lot of awards along the way.

I guess what I am trying to say is if your DD truly has a desire to play sports in college I say stick to one sport in high school so she won't risk getting burned out by the time she gets ready to go to college.

GURU: Yes that is my DD on my posts. Pic is from when she played 10U with the Carolina Cougars.

I think I kinda hacked this thread up. I was editing my post for a reply to a thread about multi sports and somehow wound up posting it here. I apologize for getting it off topic with regard to the injured player. That is of course, more important than what any of us think about multi sports. Best wishes to her for a speedy and complete recovery.
