Daniel Coffey - South Caldwell - Mars Hill

Daniel is excited about the opportunity to start for Mars Hill. He has split time at 3rd base and the DH spot. He had a slight case of the "freshman jitters" his first weekend, but has settled in and is doing very well.

He's a couple of past grads. Preston Shuey, South Meck '07 has earned the first base job over a senior, a junior and another freshman at Francis Marion University. He went 3 for 4 in his first start and drove in what proved to be the winning run when he grounded out vs Valdosta State. His stats are ba .308. 9 rbi's and 1.000% fielding avg with 75 po. Secondly, Erik Sommerville, Prov '06 is 2 and 0. In his first college start he went 7 inn, 8 k, 1 bb, 1 hit in 5 - 0 win over Davis and Elkins. FMU is currently ranked 9th in the nation in D-2 and has started 10 - 1. Conference play starts this weekend at UNC Pembroke.

    First College Gameday

My son is a true freshman at Pfieffer. Their first games were a double header against L-R. I the first game he came in the 9th inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd and got a ground ball to 2nd for the save. In the second game he came in with the score tied with runners on 1st and 2nd and got the batter to hit into a double play. He pitched a scoreless top of the 8th and Pfieffer pushed a run across to get him his first win.
So opening day he gets a win and save. It doesnt get any better than that, especially for the parent.

Grier Harrington threw 2 hitless and scoreless for UNCA on saturday. Got to see him on sunday, Grier didn't throw on sunday, but did see Cat Carter play from Ragsdale. He also had a good day on saturday at the plate. Playing second base with great hands.
