Last week we were at Garner playing a scrimmage. Our lead off guy comes to the plate and the umpire signals play ball. The first pitch is taken for a ball. The next pitch is fouled straight back over the umpires head. All of a sudden I see Garners head coach come out of the dug out and say "Blue do you realize you dont have a mask on"? The umpire is stunned. He just then realizes that he has taken too pitches in the game one fouled right back over his head without his mask on. He then jogs to his car and gets his mask. Thank God he wasnt hurt. I have never seen anything like that.

Saw the umpire hang his mask on the fence between innings while he was getting a drink and towelling off, and he forgot to put it back on. After the batter fouled the 3rd pitch off of the catcher, the field ump started screeming and calling time while he ran towards homeplate to tell hs partner he did not have his mask. Homeplate ump took a few minutes to composs himself when he realized what had happened before game restarted.

    Old South Florida Story

There's an old story from South Florida about a Cuban refugee Catcher that was down in Miami playing semi-pro ball.

He wouldn't wear the gear. Only a mask. He learned how to Catch without the shin guards or chest protector and refused to wear them. Down in Cuba (at that time) the town he played for didn't have gear.

As the story goes, a pro team saw him and offered him a tryout but couldn't sign him because he wouldn't wear the gear and they told him he HAD to.

So..............he just walked off. I know a few old timers from Miami that swear it's a true story?

To the original post...I say Holy Crap! An umpire forgetting his mask falls under the category: "If he got that one wrong, he can't be right about anything."

    I didnt get his name

but he did a pretty good job behind the plate. Im just thankful that the foul ball didnt hit him. I bet its the last time that ever happens to him.
