    ROCK HILL, SC. — Former McDowell High standout Anna Atkinson, of Wingate University, was named the 2007-08 South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball Player of the Year after leading the league in assists, steals and assist-to-turnover ratio, the league announced Friday.

    Atkinson was second in the league in scoring at 15.6 points per game. She averaged 8.52 assists with a 3.15 assist-to-turnover ratio — finishing second in NCAA Division II in both categories.

    Can anybody remember a former NW4A player going on to become a Conference player of the year in their college career?

    She is the first one to my knowledge.Even though i am a freedom fan i can say i enjoyed watching her play even though we suffered some butt kickings.

    A couple more MVP's

    Here are a couple of more MVP's that I know of. I know for certain that two other former McDowell players were conference Freshman Player of The Year and I am relatively certain that both were conference MVP's before they graduated. They are Tammy McEntire who attended Catawba College and Tara Pittman who attended Mars Hill. Both schools also in the Sac 8 conference.

    Since this topic was posted, Anna has added

    MVP conference tournament

    MVP NCAA D2 Regional.....meaning
    she has led Wingate to the elite 8 in Nebraska

    Conference championship game 0 turnovers
    D2 Regional championship gam 39 min 1 turnover.
