Runner is on first and steals second. The catcher does not throw the ball to second, she throws it back to the pitcher. As the runner is taught, she rounds the base since there was no throw. She takes a few steps, stops, assesses the situation and then returns back to second base.

The field umpire calls her out siting some 'Look back rule'. He states that once she rounded the base, she must continue to the next base since the pitcher had the ball in the circle and she was out because she went back to second.

Good call or bad call? I think it was a terrible call...

Keep in mind that this was a middle school game which don't exactly get the top of the line umpires...

Seems like a bad call i thought once you round the bag and stop you had to go one way or the other

    ANOTHER BAD CALL

The lookback rule in this situation does not start as soon as she touches the base at second. She is allowed to round the bag as long as her motion is continuous, stop and instantly return to second base. The same is said about a batter who draws a walk, she is allowed to continue around first base, stop and instantly return to the bag, and we all know by the time she reaches 1b the ball would have been back in the circle. The problem that I fight everyday, even with Collegiate Officials, is to keep them from putting their own twist or opinion into the rule. Just read the rule and in most cases it will tell you exactly what you can and cannot do.

    Welcome JavCatch!!!!.....and the answer is.....

........well, just keep reading and participating on TBR. You will find lots of cool opinions and answers. .....As for the runner rounding 2nd, as I understand it, once a runner stops completely, as in no longer moving on the base path, THEN is when she must commit her intended safe base, one way or the other. Obviously the ball being in the circle is a must, and for simplicity sake I'll add that there is no arm raising, pump faking etc., by the pitcher. In your case, I would consider the runner safe by going back to 2nd. ........Very nice thread by a first timer! Marlin

You need to suggest to this umpire that he check out TBR and learn the rules of the game!

How long was she "stopped" assessing the situation before she went back to second?

She was only stopped for about a second or two. She rounded the base, stopped, looked at the pitcher and returned back to second.

    wait a second

1 second is fine, 2 seconds is pushing it...
and 3 will get you called out.....................

How long was she really out there....
She has to make an immediate decision once the ball goes into the circle...
