Error or Fieder's choice

Runner on first. Batter pops up to infield. First base dives to catch it, turns and throws to first to get the double play. The throw is bad and goes to the outfielder who returns it to first to the second baseman waiting there. The runner going to second runs halfway, stops and comes back. THe batter goes to first. There are now two on first. The umpire rules there was no catch and the runner going to second is out. The catch was made but the umpire missed it. Is this a fielder's choice or an error on the first baseman?

I would say base hit for the batter runner, and then an outfield assist
( I'm assuming it was the right fielder) 9-4.
Can't see how there is an error, as the offense did not gain any advantage and an out was recorded. (Still only one base runner)
Fielders Choice would have to have an out recorded at a base other than 1st.

If you could give a base runner an error...It would be appropriate

Batter becomes runner at first, runner at first is out. Fielders choice, regardless of where the out is recorded.
