    FACTORS

    Factors:
    1. speed
    2. movement
    3. quick reflexes
    4. some fielding ability
    5. something between the ears

I believe in my humble opinion, that you need speed to get it there, movement to make it go where you want it to, quick reflexes if it comes back to you fast, to be able to throw it somewhere once it comes back to you & the ability to know what to do with it once you get it.

The significance of #5 gets greater with each level of play. Not only in how they use their own ability as a pitcher, but also an understanding of their dependence on each and every member of their team.

    Speed

Wndmllr can correct me here, but this is what we work on:
1- Speed : power means alot
2- Location : got to put it where ya need to. These 2 combos will go a pretty good ways
3-Spin or breaking pitches but: the harder you can throw, the more spin you can generate, thus more movement.
4- A good change up to keep those batters off balance.
5- A tough of meanness cause ya got to go after them batters.
    6- Disguising your pitches

I disagree with having 3 pitches. What if 1-2 aren't working that day, What ya gonna do ?? The more weapons you have the better. You're gonna have days where this pitch or that is not working good, so you have several more you can fall back on. I'm sure there are several other things to list. One more thing a college coach informed me of on the speed, yes they like it, but don't sit out with a radar gun. They know a pitcher may throw hard today, not quite as hard tommorrow. Alot depends on how you're feeling that day.

    Speed matters . . . a lot

I've seen a lot of D1 games the last five years. Speed and location matter a lot. Having the ball break is fine but those who say spinning the ball is more important than throwing it hard WHERE YOU WANT TO are typically Dad's whose daughters can't break 60 mph. In collge ball pitchers who depend on movement alone are quickly found out by the opposition. They are also completely at the mercy of the ump. Most breaking ball pitchers need batters swing at balls out of the zone. If the ump has a breadbox zone their task becomes impossible.

Earlier this season my daughter my daughter threw eight shut innings vs #8 Fresno State throwing 40% fastballs. Several weeks later she shut out #28 Hofstra throwing 90% fastballs. She hits 64 and bad day and 66 on good one. The point is that when all else fails kids who can bring the heat (with control) can usually survive, even against top level D1 teams.

Want a college career? Then "throw low, throw hard and keep it in the yard"

High school? Whole different deal. Strike zone is alot bigger and kids will swing at medicore rise balls all day long. IMO the medicore rise (or often really the high fastball) is the "fools gold" of HS pitchers. That same pitch is always a ball in college and if thrown for a strike more often than not ends up in the parking lot. If your Angela Tincher then keep throwing the rise, if your anything less you'd better get down!

    Who ???

Let's see last year in the Women's World Series Arizona vs Tennessee, I think maybe I could be wrong, but the Arizona pitcher kept sitting the meat of the lineup down with that '' DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS " changeup....But I could be wrong...I'm told I'm wrong all the time !!!

Who does your DD play for ???
