2008 High School Softball Scores

NEW 6 Conference Tournament Championship Game

I took in my first softball game of the year yesterday at Nash Central High School where the NEW 6 Tournament was being hosted. What a beautiful field they have.

# 1 seed Northern Nash (16-4) going against Cinderella # 4 seed Southern Nash (10-8). One of the 4 NNash loses was an 11 inning 1-0 loss to SNash earlier in the year in conference play. That was the only conference loss of the year for NNash.

To the game: The Lady Firebirds of SNash score a run in the 2nd inning on an AshleyTharrington bases loaded single after what appears as a non infield fly call that is dropped for an error by the Lady Knight 1st baseman. Anyway the game gets to the bottom of the 7th and Taylor Braswell is tossing a one hitter for SNash. I am filming the game for the Stretchlon Sports Show from the corner of the Knights dugout when the assistant coach turns to me and says we will win this game. (I think to myself YEAH RIGHT after the first girl strikes out)......WELL WELL the next girl Raven Lee walks on a 3-2 check swing and that brings up the 1st baseman that had dropped the ball for an error earlier in the game. She, Samantha Gurganus, bloops a single to right which the Lady Firebird trys to shoe string, it gets past her for what turns out to look like it will be a misplayed double. The centerfielder backs up the play and throws the yellow glow ball into the infield. Raven Lee has aggresively rounded 3rd and so the infielder fires the ball behind her to 3rd but it goes wide right and not only does Raven score but here comes Samantha with the game winning run. What a celebration and what a KNIGHT!

It was hard to watch the two emotions at once; Jumping and screaming with the joy of victory and Falling and crying with the heartbreak of defeat.

This was the best single game I have seen all year in any sport. The girls on both teams played their hearts out trying to win a championship.

NOTE: I think the assistant coach might have been Raven's dad so he must have known that his daughter would help the team pull of this miracle win.

Eastern Randolph wins mpc 3A conference championship

Eastern Randolph defeated Southwestern Randolph last night 2-0. Great work girls!!!!!!

Tough strike zone combined with lack of bats in action struck down Western. Western pitcher Kerstine Womack couldn't buy a strike, umps wanting all balls straight down the middle, from top of knees to waist. And when the ball was put where the ump wanted it, boy did Southern send it!

Only run for Western was by Sarah Thomas, who errored onto base, was sac bunted over by Sierra Holmes, and came home when Southern double errored a ball hit by Ashley Poulin. Only 2 hits by Western were by freshmen Womack (a single, going 1 for 3 at bat) and Holmes (a double to the fence, going 1 for 1 at bat).

Harnett Central faces off with Western Alamance Tuesday night. Should be a good one.
