most of all have confidence at the plate even when you are struggling. i dont mean some half hearted confidence either. you have to know it, believe it, live it and breathe it all the time. if you have no confidence you have already beat yourself. good luck.

    Called 3rd strike.

You shouldn't be thinking to much at the plate.

But you might want to think about what the pitcher needs to do in the count you are in.

This is what I tell hitters.

    For instance:

What does the pitcher need to do in a 2-0 count? Maybe he needs to find the plate? On 3-0 counts what do the majority of pitchers do? They throw a strike because they need to.

So if a pitcher is at 2-0 then he is likely to find the plate else risk going to 3-0 and having to throw something like a meatball over the plate. In other words at 3-0 he is not thinking "out at the plate" but survival.

I preach a lot about the power of the count. I don't talk about fastball counts and curveball counts because as someone mentioned you can pitch backwords. Hitting the curveball is a mechanic not a count. Ever hear a batter that struck out say, "That pitcher threw me a slider in a fast ball count!! Thats Bull!"

So my advice to you is look at hitters counts such as (0-0, 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 3-1) for good pitches to hit. Now don't get me wrong. The pitcher will look to find the plate, however he won't necessarily throw you a meatball in these counts.

Conversely, in pitchers counts (0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 0-2, 3-2?) the pitcher is likely to pitch on the outskirts of the strike zone. He is expanding the zone. He is ahead in the count and does not have to find the plate. The pitcher on any 2 strike count can afford to live on the edge of the zone as you the batter need to protect the plate. Well every count except 3-2. But it could go both ways depending how the pitcher is doing.

    Speaking of 2 strikes:

On 2 strikes the batter should be protecting the plate. You have only yourself to blame if you get called out looking. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger with 2 strikes on you. Just protect the plate and get the pitcher to make a mistake and throw one to close.

Something else to think about is the width of the strike zone. Its technically 23 inches wide not 17(plate width). Technically if any part of the ball touches any part of the zone it is a strike. (Maybe Stretch can talk to us about how umpires will call that)

    Further:
You can't hit, you won't hit, with out confidence. Period! Forget about counts and strikezone awareness. You have to tell yourself and believe that there is no pitcher alive that can get you out! That when you get up to bat that you will put the ball in play.

Force the entire defense(ALL NINE of them) to get you out, not just the pitcher and catcher! Think about that one for a minute. If you only play against the pitcher and catcher you are giving the other team a substantial advantage.

When you get up to bat play like it is your last at bat ever. Someday it will be.

    Finally:
Just swing the bat and hit the ball. Have fun.

You've got tons of great advice here. My advice is pretty simple - and something I heard a long time ago that seems to work.

Trust yourself to STOP your swing. In other words, you are SWINGING every pitch - no guessing. If your brain recognizes it is not a pitch you like - trust yourself to STOP the swing.

    2 things:

1). As you are on deck, screw everything else. Simply think base hit. A walk is unacceptable. A strike out is unacceptable. BASE FREAKIN HIT

2). Know your pitch. Do you know your pitch? Do you know what it looks like? Know your pitch and hit it hard. See it, hit it.

Have fun. THings come easy when you are having fun. If you are not having fun, re-evaluate why you are playing. All this fru-fru Dr Phil advice>>>sheesh....If you spend a great deal of at bats striking out looking, it tells me you are way lacking in your confidence at the plate. Scared to pull the trigger.

Prove me wrong then.... HIT THE BALL OR GO DOWN TRYING.

One of my theories is most kids are afraid to fail. Negative emotions = negative results. 1 for 3 puts you in the HOF. Accept some failure & you will succeed more often.
