For all of the coaches out there that are experienced, what are your top tips for becoming a great coach? I just finished my first season as a head coach with a underachieving 3-10 record at a local middle school. All the advice is greatly appreciated.

    Advice

Suck in your pride and get a job in computers. Much more room for advancement and monetary gain!! No seriously, get out to the ballfield, get to know people, and surround yourself with the "in peeps". You always want to be in cohoots with the primary beneficiaries! Politics is the key word here.

find knowlegable ppl you can talk to and listen to what they say.

Go to clinics and talk baseball with coaches

There are good books out there, some examples are Ron Polk's Baseball playbook, Coaching Pitchers by Spanky McFarland, and Rod Delmonico's baseball books. Danny Hall at Georgia Tech has excellent fielding videos.

Where are u from? There are excellent clinics inthe state too...Especially the NCBCA clinic in January, the George Whitfield clinic in Goldsboro and the Baseball Bash in Richmond VA.

Never think you know everything about this great game, because you won't.

No matter how old you are, nor how many years you've been around the game, you CAN AND WILL always learn something that you didn't know if you will just always be willing to keep your eyes and ears open.

If you can tell us what area you are from, we would be able to better direct you to those that can help...including the question you asked about getting involved with a showcase team.

you are fortunate to be involved with such a good program. My son knows some of the players from the varsity squad. Talk to Frank Parrish, Tate Parrish's dad. He can put you on the road to success.

    George Whitfield Clinic

Sign up for the George Whitfield baseball clinic in Goldsboro next January. George is a legend in NC baseball and he has been hosting this one day clinic for almost 40 years. Pro scouts, some of the best college coaches in the country, and great high school coaches teach the sessions. I learned more about baseball, and how to teach it, in that one day than the rest of my life combined.

former University of Arizona Baseball Coach, Jerry Kindall, wrote a book published by Sports Illustrated, titled Play The Winning Way. It is a MUST read for the young, up and coming baseball coach at ANY level. seek it out, give it a read, keep it in your coaches bag........along with a Blue Book. you wont be sorry.
