Ex Cary, NC player (Alan DeRatt) leads the nation in ERA

"ASHEVILLE, N.C.—UNC Asheville right-handed pitcher Alan DeRatt continues to lead the nation in ERA for the second week in a row and the third week this season. DeRatt’s 1.15 ERA is ahead of Bethune-Cookman’s Hiram Burgos (1.29) and UC Irvine’s Christian Bergman (1.41).

DeRatt is tied for the Big South lead in wins with a 7-2 record. The Cary, N.C., native is tied for sixth nationally with 12 starts. The Dogs are 8-4 in games which DeRatt has started this season."

At the UNC-A vs UNC-G game last week, the MLB scouts behind home plate looked like a Meercat colony as they would pop their radar guns up every pitch Alan threw.

 

As an update, Alan continues to pitch well. Last night he threw a complete 10 inning game for UNCA in a 3-2 victory over High Point University in the first day of the Big South Conference Tournament. He gave up only 1 earned run over the course of 10 innings and threw something in the neighborhood of 112 pitches.

I heard, from and unofficial source, that Alan was just named Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year for 2008.

Alan made the cut from 100 to 64 on the Wallace Watch list.
