Great hitters (Ted Williams, Ruth) for years have swung 2 bats in the on deck circle for a reason...I take issue with a "strength coach" who never hit MLB pitchers.

    Maybe to clearify...

The difference in this discussion is or was the fact that Braves was stating that the use of heavier bats etc. for training could be counter productive. Metro in your response you said "on deck circle". There is a difference. Question: is a weighted bat OK to warm up with in the ODC ? For me, yes, but I'm wrong alot.
Also there are alot of trainers and stength coaches, college coaches etc that haven't hit MLB pitching but we would all agree they do know more than you or I.

I think it's great to use on deck to loosen up shoulders and such.

I was a part of a discussion about these things a few months ago. Officially, it's an alteration. I think some people (who should know better) confuse these with Flares and other devices that actually change the shape of the knob. While I think it stilly, technically, it is illegal.

Getting back on subject... it is possible for different, well informed, well credentialed people to come up with different opinions on the same subject. There are those that teach Rotational Mechanics and those that swear by Linear Mechanics. I don't think you can say that either is wrong, but they are different.

My personal experience is that when my DD did all her drills with a 24 ounce bat, then hit with a 22.5 ounce bat, her batting average improved dramatically. When the 24 ounce bat "disappeared" from her bat bag and she quit doing drills with it, her average suffered as more balls got fielded. Since this fits inside the 15% range Mr Doyle sited, I guess this is still acceptable to Braves' school of thought.

A couple of years before that, however, when she would do before game drills with an 8 oz ring, her in-game performance was markedly better.

I think we'd better agree to disagree on weight.

    Sorry BigCat that you ....

...thought that I called you ignorant. I did not. My post was an opinion, not meant to be ALL THINGS to all people. As for your request of spending time researching.......I'll spend mine teaching the kids to knock to cover off the ball, to know what to do and when to do it in ANY situation, and let the geeks who don't know the meaning of a TDrill to do the research for me. As for your reply content...I believe that you're right in that explosiveness in a swing is derived from different avenues and that overdoing, say, weight gigs, in the on deck circle, certainly can and will lock up the very tendon strength type speed that is so important to batspeed. Bring it on BCat! We need folks like you to give good points. Fishman.
