Secret?

Is there a reason why it is a secret and you can't share with the board in general?

Guru sometimes likes to have an air of mystery about him.
Most Gurus are very particular about how and to whom they dispense their infinite wisdom. and I guess if we have to ask we are not worthy.
Maybe, just maybe if you humbly seek Guru"s wisdom by the mystical means of a PM you to can become enlightened.

 

I guess I will have to climb the hill and see if I am worthy of the Guru's wisdom.

I didn't do a good job with my older DD and now have a rising sophomore who just started playing 16U so am very interested in what I can do better for her.

 

No mystery there. Wisdom, yes. Guru did not want to post something he thought would disrupt the board. It would not have been informative to others.

 

I am not claiming to be a Guru, but there are plenty of '09s playing 16U. Carolina, for one, has watched 16Us play in the ASA State tournament in previous years. At the Rising Stars tournament, in Plantation, Fall 2006, it appeared to me that the D1 coaches who, as noted, couldn't talk to players or parents, were taking plenty of notes on '09s and '10s.

 

Why would an 09 play 16u even if she could? seems to me if your that good you should be challenging yourself and be where the majority of coaches are and that is 18u. JMHO

Maybe she is one of the ones who still play for the love of the game and wants to play with her friends. Loyality. Probablly has parents who haven't fell into the get a scholarship at all cost crowd. I say good for her, have fun playing and you'll get the most out of your time

 

College coaches and 09's, 10's and 11's

A lot of the major Div I schools have already completed their recruiting for 09, getting early verbal commitments. There are still many Div I schools that are looking for 09 kids. Many have already started work on their 10 and 11 classes. They can't initiate contact with the players or parents yet, but the players and parents can contact them.

It works like this...and it happens in every major sport so don't think softball is alone in this practice...

A Div I coach likes a player...coach talks to the travel ball coach to let them know that they are interested in player A and gives the coach as much information as they want to about scholarship and all that...college coach asks TB coach to pass the information along to the kid and have them contact the coach, which is all legal. Kid and parents contact the school and the recruiting process starts. Usually, schools will have the kids come on an unofficial visit sometime where they can do pretty much everything they can on an official visit, just not get reimbursed for travel.

Most Div II and III coaches are recruiting now for 09's. Some are still trying to bring in 08's. We usually have to wait until the big time schools get their pick and then we go after what we need. Usually, Div II and III schools don't have the staffing or budgets to seriously look at both 09 and 10's at the same time. Some do and have great lists for the next year. It's all about what resources a school has and what their recruiting philosophy is. Using myself as an example...I have never seriously recruited a class ahead because I have had to focus so much on the current class. However, this year, we only need 1, maybe 2 players and will have a bigger need in the 10 class. So, I have been spending more time looking at 10's this year than ever before because of our particular situation.

It's all about what a program needs and what resources they have to work with. But make no mistake, softball is becoming a big time business at the major BCS schools and some of the same recruiting tactics that have been taking place for years at major Div I football and basketball are creeping into the sport of softball.
