    Another issue that isn't always talked about is that scholarships - athletic or academic - are not automatic for four years. Athletic scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and may or may not be renewed depending on the circumstances. Academic monies are usually tied to certain stipulations also such as keeping a certain GPA. This is not always easy for a regular college student not to mention those that play sports as well. Athletes have to really learn how to manage their time to keep up with their studies and athletic commitments.

    A lot depends on what major the kids are going for. I have two brothers in-law, one finished top 5, got no money at VT for eng. The other one finished top 50 and has a full ride at ECU in the medical field. My DD already has a full ride to UNC for teaching.

    Out of all of the young ladies we all know playing TB maybe 1% will actually make a living at it.

    Wrong!

    At UNC-Chapel Hill (and many other colleges) boys are just as likely to get academic aid as girls. In fact it is rumored in "the system" that Chapel Hill, in particular, has adopted a covert 'affirmative action' stance toward male applicants. There is concern about the fact that nearly 60% of student body is now female.

    That high? I think you're high by an order of magnitude (or you know a lot more softball players than I do). Unless you're counting sports medicine and for those ending up as high school coaches you're including the base teaching salary in addition to the coaching stipend (because the stipend might not cover their expenses).

    lets take this one step further. DADDY BALL..... i think that all of you will agree with me that softball wouldnt exist without the dads who start teams for their daughters and her friends. hats off to all of you for doing this...but as your daughters career progresses, most dad's realize that for their daughter to progress, they have to leave the coaching to someone else, which is fine. Now, i am in no way saying that playing for your father is a bad thing in the older groups of girls, but i am saying that extreme daddy ball will cost you in the eyes of a college coach.

    I have had this discussion with many of my college coaching friends. at ages 16-18, most college coaches are looking for maturity in a player and perhaps a little bit of independence from the parent/coach. for most who play for dad, its really not an issue, for some, it is.

    an example of this is when a college coach makes you an offer. how do you reply??? do you say to the coach: "i have to talk this over with my dad" or do you say: "I need some time to think about this"???

    now, the college coach knows you're going to talk this over with your parents, and rightfully so. but if you reply with the second choice, it says more about your self independence than the total reliance on dad/mom. little things like this add up to a lot in a coaches eyes.

    this isnt just my personal opinion, it was formed from some pretty deep discussions about potential recruits with some good coaches.
