Triangle Babe Ruth Brings Home The Titles

The 16U and 18U Eastern North Carolina State Babe Ruth Tournament concluded last night at Tarboro Municipal Stadium. District 2, which includes the counties of Alamance, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Orange, Vance, Warren, Wake and plays under the team name TRIANGLE, brought home the titles in both age groups.

After watching the TRIANGLE 16U, coached by Joe Lebeda, win a 7 - 5 thriller over a very determined District 1 - Lumber River squad, the TRIANGLE 18U followed suit with a 7 - 6 win over District 4 - Carolina Stars.

TRIANGLE 18U, coached by Donald Moody (Warren County HS); and Orlando Jones (St. Augustine's College) took an early 1 - 0 lead in the bottom of the first on a SAC FLY by P/CF Nate Smith (Knightdale HS/NCCU Signee) scoring SS/2B Andrew Satterfield (South Granville HS). The Stars tied the game at 1 in the top of the 2nd. In the TRIANGLE 3rd, Andrew Satterfield reached on a single followed by a BB to Nate Smith. Crawford Bolton (Louisburg HS) (utlity man) advanced the runners on a grounder to 1st. William (TJ) Kearney (Warren County HS) 3B/RHP drove a bullet up the rightfield line scoring Satterfied and Smith for a 3 - 1 Triangle lead.

TRIANGLE 18U scored 2 more runs in the 4th. Satterfield reached on a BB followed by double by Smith. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Crawford Bolton singled to left scoring Satterfield and Smith.

The Stars of District 2 would not go quietly. They plated 2 runs in the top of the 5th making the score 5 - 3. Despite outstanding starting pitching for both teams (TRIANGLE - RHP Brett Garrett - Louisburg High/Louisburg College Recruit; and District 2 - Jeremey Efird - Wilson Christian Academy), the bullpens took over in the 6th.

In the top of the 6th, District 2 tied the game on a monstrous 2 run homer. In the top of the 7th, District 2 scored the go ahead run. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, District 2 scored on a passed ball. Crawford Bolton who had moved behind the plate when Catcher and RH Reliever Anthony Voght (Home School) was summoned to the mound, tagged out the runner who was trying to score from SECOND on the passed ball - ending the inning. For the first time in the tournament, TRIANGLE 18U found themselves behind.

Andrew Satterfield led off the inning with a popup. Nate Smith beat out an infield single and later stole second. Crawford Bolton popped up for the 2nd out. William (TJ) Kearney 3B/RHP drove an 0-1 fastball over the left field scoreboard ending the game with a walk off 2 run homer.

Next up for TRIANGLE 18U is a trip to the Southeast Regional Babe Ruth Tournament beginning July 24th in South Hill Virginia.

Next Up for TRIANGLE 16U is a trip to the Southeast Regional Babe Ruth Tournament beginning July 24th in Vienna, Virginia.

Nice report Coach. How did you like the stadium in Tarboro? I love that place. Stadium surroundings, but not too large. Some may find it odd that there are no seats, or benches. I was told that when the renovations were going on it was determined that drilling into the old concrete to afix seats would not be a good idea. The neat thing about that result is that you can bring your own comfortable chair.

    Tarboro Municapl Stadium ...

... is a very fine facility. I loved it! Not too often you can "bring your own chairs" and sit under a covered canopy. They should not change a thing. Warren and his players, staff, and crew did an amazing job in hosting this event. That championship game last night had all the drama anyone could expect at baseball game. There as some very fine talent on display as well. The Efird "kid" pitched a helluva ballgame. He hit 92 a couple of times. Garret was consistently 87 -89. After the 1st inning, everyone knew it would be decided by the starter who lasted longest. They both went 5 innings.
