    ...Exactly right.....only different!...

.....different as I can't say I came to Wilders Grove via Conn. .....You must be a Yankee fan! My DD was involved with all of the above and BELIEVE me folks, this faction rocked. It was not only the very talented group of kids who just happened to live in the area, but add to that, the mainstay of true gamesmart coaches/adm, that helped pave the way for our kids.

    Greenville Rec Ball Decline

Here in Pitt Co rec ball also seems to be on the decline, although it is still stronger than in many areas. The local Babe Ruth organization has a great complex and a great history. My DD pitched for the all-star team that won the first of many 12U world series back in 2000. Ironically, all-star success may be one of the factors that hurt the league in the older age groups. After 2000 the league became more all-star oriented with those teams essentially being surrogates for the 'primo' local travel team. This turned off some people. There also seemed to be an explosion of travel teams locally beginning around 2003 further taking away talent. The rec league responded by offering younger age groups and I think the bulk of kids in league today are 6-10 years old; not a bad thing necessarily. Ironically, though, I think "daddy ball' is the rule for the travel teams around here; many seem to be no better than the rec teams my DD played on in ten years ago. The result is I don't think there is any "A" level travel organization because there are too many teams diluting the talent. Even five years ago my DD left her Pitt Co based team to play with the Wildcats for that very reason.

S%&&@! is also a huge draw here. We have huge number of faculty and physician kids and I think they are more comfortable with the 'gentler' sport. Both me DD's played the sport early on. Both were terrible but the nice thing was no one knew it. They could run up and down the field while avoiding engagement as good as the next kid. No embarrassing K's or E's! Both eventually moved to sports (volleyball, softball and track and X-Country) where there is 'no place to hide'. That was a relief for me because I'd rather watch paint dry than a s%&&@! game!

I would have kept my dd in rec but she was stronger than her age level. In meck the 8u pitch two inings and then coach pitch with 5 run rule limit. When the players she played with moved to 10u she had to stay down do to age. Then at try outs she threw the ball and the new girls ran or moved out of the way of her throwing so I had no choice but to find a TB that would not be scared of her. She is still playing up she just turned 11 and has been playing 12u for over a year. My other dd loved rec ball and we noticed there were not many teams left.

    hurt 'em

a parent once told me he wanted his kid to play up in rec ball because he was afraid she would physically hurt the girls her same age with a batted or thrown ball.

I think most of the better kids in rec ball played up a age. I know mines always did and few more peeps you see on here dd did too.I just watch a JR girls all star team play last week and it was pretty sad to see the skill level. But with that being said i know it helped my dd to get started and she loved it until she found out about travel ball. The last year she played i was coaching (she begged me too)she decided she wanted to play t/b. she had to finish the fall season and never been back. i think they all want to play with girls about the same skill level.

    It has It's Place !!

All seriousness "REC" is exactly what it means..recreation...I have visited many rec facilities and the girls that play in rec leagues are there for the pure fun of it. Now if we could generate the word "FUN" into our more competitive levels then we woud be accomplishing something !!! I hear all the time from friends that there is too much pressure in TB/SC ball and the "FUN" is removed...let's learn to put the word "FUN" back into the next level !!!
