CoachEvans, good to hear from you. A couple things, the 19-year old rule is a national rule, and depending on who you ask, it is either the last year for 19 year olds, or its simply a rumor. A very successful and well-respected college coach once told me "he would just as soon have his college freshmen playing legion ball", because 19 year olds "should" get playing time on a legion team being one of the oldest players, and this coach added that "in certain situations, the competition level was just fine". I guess it would depend on the specific kid and their different situations, whats available, etc.

As for the Central Carolina Summer League,,, is this the summer HS league in Raleigh? Are HS coaches making it mandatory for their players to play this?

As for your opinion on the state of legion ball on the decline, that is your opinion and I respect your opinion. But judging by the games I've seen this year and in recent years, not sure I agree its on the decline. In recent weeks I have consistently seen halfnhalf pots where the winning ticket took home between $200 and as much as $450.

I will agree its tough for legion teams to compete who only draw from 1-2 high schools. That is when you have to ask yourself the question, "are you doing it to win, or are you doing it so that boys will have an opportunity to play?"

No offense taken. Here's my philosophy on Post 7 baseball: If I'm going to ask these graduating seniors and college freshmen to give up their summer to play Legion ball, I'm going to put the best team I can on the field each and every night. I'm not here for 'player development', that's up to their high school coaches. If we expect to compete with the Cherryville's, the Morehead City's, and Wilmington's in legion ball, we have to put an all star team on the field; that's exactly what they're doing.

I have 2 coaches that allow any of their players to play on the Legion team if invited, and I have 2 coaches that only allow graduating seniors to play.

Try telling that to some of the ego maniacs we have around here. Coaches hold playing time as well as college endorsement over some of these kids' heads- it's ridiculous but it happens.

What good does it do a rising senior to play against incoming freshmen?
    Answer: none

You never kept your temper in check and you definately dont have an open door policy. My point was to AGREE with another post that Garner didnt have to go as far as they did to build a team, they had other GREAT players in Garner. I personally heard Coach Cook state that only 2 players were good enough to play on his legion team from the GHS team during the HS season. This was not true. If this is a negative statement about the other GHS players then it is you that has made it, not me.

    making excuses

I believe DABATBOY was referring to your positive posting about the parents and players from Garner. I only see one person making excuses here.

2nd point, dont you just hate it when a teenager is right and you are wrong?

    More than one solution

There are 2 plans in the recruiting process of American Legion Rule 3, maybe it is time to drop the present plan and adopt the other. From what I read this doesnt affect other conferences and I believe eliminates the 5000 rule problem!

Ok, then I will say the names of the good players at Garner. They were Will Medlin going to Chowan and Zach Howell who I hear is also going to UNC Greensboro with Kris. That wasnt so hard? It has nothing to do with me or whining and yes I am being polite and yes other players need accolades on this board by neutral posters.

Does this sound familiar DATABOY? Looks like you're the one that said that there were only two good players at Garner.

I read that post myself. It appears that a West Johnston dad could not remember names or good players from Garner. Funny, I personally know that his son played for several years with many of the Garner HS players with the Carolina Thunder. How nice that DABATBOY could name them and he couldnt, how about you GarnerPost232 can you name some of the other GHS GOOD players? Or you didnt think there werent anymore. I believe you had one that was an All-Conference Award winner that wasnt on the Garner Legion team, what is his name?

Zach Howell and Matt Kiel were the only all conference players Garner had. There are several good players at Garner. However, some were not available because of the high school summer league. The legion team and high school team shared Dillon Creech, but that was not an option with other players (Patrick Monahan, Hunter Brown, etc.) These were the seniors from last year's team:

    Zach Howell-UNC Greensboro
    Wil Medlin-Chowan University
    Matt Kiel-Brunswick Community College
    Jordan Young-Brunswick Community College
    Austin Gulley
    Zach Clay
    Eric Josey
    Matt Beck
