Thought this would be a good one. How many players on a team are walk ons? Is it a waste of time to even try? What does a player need to do to prepare?

I would say that in football or basketball, walking on is a virtual waste of time if playing time is the goal. In baseball, I would say that a hard worker with skills but maybe lacking the size or velocity that the schools are looking to spend their scholly $$ on has a good chance to get playing time.

Great topic, especially with the new baseball recruiting rules: maximum of 27 scholarship players on a roster, with each of these 27 receiving at least a 25% scholarship; maximum roster size of 35. So each program will likely have 6-8 walkons per team. I spoke to the head coach of a prominent NC ACC school at a recent tournament and asked him what his philosophy will be when it comes to those 6-8 recruited, non-scholarship players. He said that he would have to be a pretty talented player who can somehow help the team, would have to be an excellent student, be from NC(lower tuition) and really wants to play for his school, even for no scholarship money. I think these "walkons" will play an important part in the success of a college team in the future.
