I think we would all agree that LITTLE LEAGUE baseball has for many years accomplished the things it does to position itself above all others as the top organization with all the publicity and ESPN TV exposure.

How would you rank other organizations and please support your opinion?

I think that Babe Ruth ball is gaining a lot of positive exposure especially with the Cal Ripken endorsement and divisions taking on his name.

Dixie, Babe Ruth and Little League all do an excellent job at what they do. Yes, the potential exposure is greatest with Little League, but at the local and state levels, I see very little difference in the quality of play. Our local organization plays in Dixie through twelve years old and then switches to Babe Ruth for 13-15. It has worked very well for us.

I Will say that all of the organizations do a wonderful job of promoting the game and teaching it to the players. But the organizations are only as good as the people involved with running them. We are fortunate in Roxboro to have wonderful people working hard to help the Roxboro Little League develop and grow. I grew up playing Bixie Youth and Babe Ruth and was very fortunate to play for coaches that cared for the kids. MOre than the baseball skills are the life skills to be learned from youth baseball. The folks in Roxboro Little LEague are working hard to do all of the above and are to be commended.

I really like PONY baseball and have had and seen a lot of good experiences.

I like the 2 year age groups
    5-6 shetland
    7-8 pinto
    9-10 mustang
    11-12 bronco
    13-14 pony
    15-16 colt
    17-18 palimino

I like what it stands for and it's driving principle. PONY - Protecting Our Nations Youth

I like the way through tournaments you advance to a World Series.

I like the fact they play baseball beginning at age 9-10, ie.. They lead off, straight steal, pick-off, dropped third strike, its baseball. Some may say, why does a 10 year old need to worry about a pick off move? Good point. By why dumb it down? Kids can learn as long as we don't set boundries. JMO.

I like the team selection process, no carryoing forward of teams year to year. Kids meet kids from everywhere. No coaches walking in the selection process with 4 studs and claiming that all are the coaching staff. As head coach you get your son and then you select from there. Kids attend a skills day.

I like mixing with other communities and playing kids from other twons regularly.

    Tarheel Little League

Here in Rocky Mount the city program is a member of the Little Tarheel Little League Organization with Midget League for 9-10 year olds and Little League for 11-12 year olds. The organization really caters to smaller communities in the state and is very well run by Jimmy Gaines and his staff.

The only down side is that you can only win a District and State Championship as they do not have any National events ie: Regionals or World Series. My 1999 All-Star team won the first ever State Championship for the city and it was very exciting BUT I really wish we would have had the chance to advance further. That year we might have been able to win a World Series!!

The state tournament in Edenton in 1999 was fantastic. The teams were:
Edenton, Wilkes County, Burke County, Hillsborough, Jacksonville, Clayton, Williamston and Rocky Mount Nationals.

Can anyone name any players on these teams that are now playing college ball? They would be rising juniors or seniors this year.

    Green Street Youth Baseball League

Hi. My name is Billy. Our league is the best. We are the Green Street Youth Baseball League of Centerville. Actually it’s only part of our block. We don’t let the bully down the street play because he is mean and he is way better than the rest of us in the league.

Anyway, we are the best league. The Pythons (cool name huh?) won the Green Street Youth Baseball League World Series this past weekend! The Pythons is actually just me and my friend’s sister. But teams from all over the world were invited to play but really only 5 kids from our neighborhood were actually there. Like I said, one is a girl (Sally). She is the 2nd best player behind me but we have to say that her brother Johnny is better than her or he will go home and tell his Mom.

I am the best player in the entire youth baseball league. I know that there are lots and lots of other leagues out there (too many to keep track of) but ours is the best. We could kill any little league team because they couldn’t hit our taped up whiffle ball without lots and lots of practice and besides we make up new rules every game.

One time a couple of new boys from a couple of blocks away tried to come and play in our league and they were way better than us so we quit and started a new league and told them they couldn’t play. They went away and I think they joined a USSSA or AAU travel team.

Anyway it is fun being the best player in our league. We always win. Timmy and David always lose but they don’t seem to mind. David is only 6 so he doesn’t really know he lost anyway.

I am glad we don’t have to tryout for the travel team. It’s hard and the boys are mean and don’t care if the ball hits us. We like our neighborhood league and sometimes Timmy’s Mom brings lemonade and cookies to the field.

    The End.
