    cutoffs thru the ages

in HS baseball I remember being taught the 3rd baseman is cutoff for throws to home from LF (SS covers 3rd) and the 1B is cutoff for all other throws from the OF. may have changed in 30+ years.

Some team uses the pitchers because the develops so much faster than in baseball and if your 1st and 3rd basemen are not on top of things they get there late. Also, it happens because when girls are young many coaches do not have outfielders throw ahead of runners but have them throw straight to pitcher and then as they get older this habits kind of just sticks with them.

We have always had 1st and SS be the cuts (we tell 3rd if the ball isn't hit to her, go straight to the base no matter what) and pitcher is backup for 3rd and home.

As for Jelly... she was so bad throwing to first (not knocking her) I always wondered why the coach never told her to just throw/snap it underhanded to first. Might take a little getting used to on first but I bet she would make more accurate throws (and more outs) that way...
