it is my understanding that a redshirt does not count against the official roster. This could be misinformation but i'm pretty sure

First, there are two rosters to be aware of. There is the team roster and the travel roster. Every player on the team is on the team roster, which at the D1 level is now limited to only 35. If you aren't on that roster you don't need to red shirt because you are not on the team. ie, getting cut at the January deadline. You have basically tried out for the team for several months and then let go.

NCAA allows 10 semesters to play four years. So even if a athlete is cut in january he has started his 5-year window and will need to either try out again the next fall or go to another school because he is losing semesters.

The travel roster is determined by the individual coach and institution. Most schools travel between 25-28, depending on type of road trip and budget restraints.

Some people use the term "redshirt" to describe a DI "nonqualifier". If a player signs an NLI but fails to meet NCAA Initial Elgibility standards, the school is prohibited from providing any type of "athletic support" for the 1st year. If the school REALLY wants the player (they obviously did if they issued the NLI), they keep the player "involved" that 1st-year ~ hence the term "red-shirt". That player can get his 4th year of elgibility provided he has completed 80% of his degree requirements prior to August 1 of his 4th year.

The player does not "officially" count against the 35 player maximum as he is not "officially" on the team.

    I hope this information helps.

cbsconsult - It never even occurred to me to include prop 48's into the red shirt conversation. You are absolutely correct. We've never been able to have that type student so for good or bad have not gone through that situation.

If a player is redshirted, he is still part of the 35 man roster. If you have 3 redshirts then there can only be 32 active players.

Guess the better question: Is how many can you have? Is there a limit?

I've heard that there likely won't be as many redshirts with the new roster size limitations. Coaches can't afford to have players on the team that aren't contributing in some way, except in the case of injuries.

To be honest, that's the way it's always been. Injury was the only way to a redshirt
