Quick Rule Question......

    Someone saw this last night in a fall baseball game and I didn't know, but with the brilliant and insightful minds present here, I figured it wouldn't take long to find the correct ruling.

    Player A hits a ball to SS who then throws a short hop not picked by the 1B, ball hits first base coach while he is in the box, ricocheting out of play. Does player A get 1B, or does he get 2B?

    Ouch

    He gets second base as ball went into dead ball territory as coach went back crying to the dugout!!

    Would never had guessed it as a dead ball, with coach being in the box.

    Thank you.....

    I didn't know if the base coach is deemed "in the field of play" or if the coaches box was designated some other way. In other words, wasn't sure at what point the ball was dead.

    Coach is hurting

    It is a dead ball only because it went out of play otherwise it can hit the coach and still be a live ball.

    should depend on what coach is in the box. The other team should be be awarded a run.
