Has anyone heard if HS coaches will be required to wear helmets this year? I know Legion wore them, and I had to wear one at the U16 USA tournament in Jupiter. I am hearing rumors but nothing concrete. I checked the NFHS website and their was no mention of it.

The baseball coaches were told by Que Tucker at the baseball rules session at the NCCA clinic that helmets would not be required this season. That still obviously could change but I dont think so.

Along those lines, something that always scares me is seeing inexperienced kids allowed to throw bp in the cage...many coaches dont know the right way to use an L screen properly, much less a 16 yr old player. Just an opinion, but I think it would be wise for coaches to require players to wear helmets while throwing in the cage, IF they must have them throwing in there at all .

This is a good point. It may be good also to reminded kids as a dead period approaches and they more likely may be involved in unsupervised activities.

I have walked up to a field a number of times, only to find kids throwing BP from 45-50 feet with no screens at all. I am sure they think I’m crazy and “who is this old man” since I do not coach, when I walk into their BP and insist that they go grab an L-screen that is only 100 feet or less away.

Know several coaches that have been seriously injured even with a screen. At 16, the sense of indestructibility is too great for their own good at times. Last thing we need is a kid get seriously hurt or worst because they did not take a minute to go get the needed equipment in place before beginning their workout.

    Great Job Mincmi

I have done the same throw BP a many of time without a L screen and my thick headed self has been nailed several times. As I got older I got wiser and I demand a L- screen when I throw BP.
On a side note I think catchers should always use at least a mask when catching a bull pen. I got nailed by Ashton Ward's rise ball at On Deck and it made me term the phrase " A mask, never catch a bull pen with out it" lol
