Mods, tell me if I am starting too many posts. I am just excited to ask some questions and bounce some ideas around.......

In the playoffs, I am guessing that each team provides a line judge? IS it just too cost prohibitive to pay for an official official? I would just hate for a game to come down to a girl trying hard but messing up......

    Glad you are asking!!

eastside: I am glad you are asking questions!! Thats how we all learn and grow!! You probably could have put this under your "Offciating question" thread but thats ok!
Now to your question: I can't speak for the other conferences but in the 4A conference they use "officials" as line judges. Example is Tuesday night in our playoff game the Up-Ref(R1) and the down ref(R-2) were both Officials I had seen this year and the lines judges were also.
If it is different in the other conferences please someone tell me.
I know for a fact at the State Championships they use all officials and the Officials that get to work the Championships "earn" this by there performance during the year.

As far as i'm concerned, you cant start too many threads when it comes to discussing sports. I'm not a volleyball person, softball is my game, but i often to to watch my girls play volleyball to support them in their endevors.

i never understood why our schools had to supply a line judge, and often witnessed that the calls were shaky and often biased to their hs....I just dont believe you should put a girl in this position period, as the pressure is often too great on them, but thats just my personal opinion. i dont know what the schools pay a person to officiate for volleyball, but its 75.00 for softball per ump. i dont think they earn that much, but i wonder if schools would pay for the extra two officials???

I think you are correct about the cost issue

I think you hit the nail on the head eastside! Imagine the schools having to pay for 4 officials and a thought I just had.....the booking agencies would have to find more officials!! That in it's self would probably be hard also.
Here at Person highschool I have been doing lines for the Rockets for three years now. And I also travel with them to all away games and do lines. I had a conversation with several officials this year and they feel if they cannot have official line judges that at least the schools should seek adult volunteers that know the game to do lines. I myself coach club ball and have been to all the clinics so I know the game (played in my younger days) and because of my love for the game I can remain impartial at games. Now during the playoffs I do not have a job so I work at the scorers table tracking the libero. I do agree that adult line judges should be used, can make a big difference in a game.........and if you watch, play or see enough volleyball, one bad call on a line can be big! All I got to say about that! :)

Numerous times I have seen the up judge over rule a call that a "player" line judge has made during regular season. More than one over rule and they are apt to be replaced. Most of the girls who play in the Coastal Conference from Pitt County, also play ECJVC and are required to attend officiating/rules classes each year, prior to play for ECJVC. Some young ladies are a lil too timid to take the responsibility of line judge, but I know most of the girls I have seen call it down East are on top of it.

Too much riding on post season play to allow kids to call it.

I'm sure cost is the driving force behind line judges. It is understandable that regular season games are officiated by "someone from the stands".
I do think in playoffs there should be "officials" doing that job. I'm not saying someone would intentionally make a call to help out thier team. I'm saying it is important that someone who is impartial should make the call.
Wouldn't you hate to be the fan who said "out" on the play that sent your DD's team packing and the other on to the state playoffs?

I guess if the line judges are paid it is the same as the other officials?
