Sliding in Metal Cleats

There has been many conversations about metal cleats in the past, so I thought I would post this after watching the World Series game last night. If anyone wants to teach their daughter how to slide in metal cleats, have them watch the World Series and see how these guys slide. One in particular is B.J. Upton(#2) from Tampa Bay Rays. He has the perfect feet first slide for metal cleats. Front foot in the air and other leg is tucked under, sliding on top of the laces. It is an art in motion. Watch and Learn.

 

Of particular note, right leg under, left leg extended... which allows for the body (and more specifically the face) to face the outfield, away from the throw from the catcher on the steal or left side IF. Player is less apt to wear one in the grill sliding in this position, allowing him to naturally be facing away from a throw.

There are several variations of this slide.

But, I will ask, what do you see the difference in sliding in steel vs rubber/plastic? Little Leaguers make the transition to the big field and into steel with little to no issue...

In baseball, you have to be VERY careful of your extended leg sliding in... as if you elevate it too much, the umpire may deem it coming in spikes high and call you out!
