    ONLY THE GREAT ONES!

The GREAT PLAYERS aren't taught that. It is instinctive. Utley knew what he was going to do with the ball as soon as it was hit to him. Just like Mike Schmitt said..."Utley was born to play baseball!"

One of the things I have always taught my players (softball) is that you ALWAYS go two bases hard with two outs. You never know when a ball may be thrown in the dirt, dropped or misplayed.

The base runner, Bartlett was doing just that, going two bases with two outs. Utley just made an amazing and smart play. Apparently Bartlett wasn't going as hard as he should have been as he would have been safe because the throw was up the line.

Come on, I thought you baseball guys knew the two bases with two outs base running rule.........lol. We do it on my fastpitch team all the time (well most of the time that is!)

Seriously, this is just a good rule to use on the bases. We have scored a lot of runs this way.

    60' bases- Easy Score

90' bases- dead meat!, even if the first baseman drops the ball or receives a dirt ball from the infield

At the time, I thought it was just bad baserunning...both effort AND judgement ( who was ondeck ? ) . I think most big league 2nd basemen make that play ...

90' vs. 60' exactly. So how much longer is the throw on a baseball diamond compared to softball?

Thanks for helping make my point!

I agree. Bad baserunning decision. How many times have you seen a runner score from 2nd base on an INFIELD hit?

It was an aggressive play when the game was tied. Again, if the runner did not slow down and picked up his coach's signal...we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Keep in mind McCarver was a Phillie and there was alot of pressure on him to be fair to both sides.

So you saying a runner can run faster than a ball can be thrown?
