Getting to know: Jeff McNeely, Megastars

    Jeff McNeely, founder and head coach of the Charlotte Megastars. Jeff is an awesome fun loving guy who loves to compete and enjoys encouraging his kids to play hard. Jeff was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 1989 draft.

    What is your earliest memory of playing baseball?
    1. My earliest memory of playing baseball was at Walter Bickett in Monroe, NC. My friends and I would go there to see how many balls we could hit over the fence.

    When did you start thinking that you might make it to the Pro's?
    2. My senior year in high school when scouts suggested for me to attend SMC junior college to be eligible for the draft by giving up a football scholarship at University of Michigan.

    What led you to be a coach?
    3. After retiring due to a shoulder injury and wanting to share my knowledge with others.

    How did you get started in showcase?
    4. I started showcase in 2000 there were only a handful of teams back then (Carolina Cubs, Uhwarrie Anglers, Carolina Hurricanes, On Deck O's, Diamond Devils).

    How did you come up with the name Megastars?
    5. Megastars came from the concept of developing a Big Star player in our program.

    What is your favorite part of coaching and showcase?
    6. My favorite part of coaching showcase baseball is the competitive nature and goal to beat the opponent you play against.

    What is your least favorite part of coaching and showcase?
    7.My least favorite part is the recruiting process for players and selecting your team.

    What is your fondest major league memory?
    8. My fondest major league memory is my first major league hit off Roberto Hernandez a reliever for the Chicago White Sox.

    I'm glad knowing that you guys on THR is getting around to different people in baseball on these interviews. I will say that all young baseball players need to get to know Mr. McNeely and try to get a chance to play for him and the Megastars.
