NEWTON - It may not be the Super Bowl, but you can't tell that to Newton-Conover High School fans.
Julie Kisser, school secretary, had her hands full answering the phone and was kept busy by people wanting tickets to ride on a charter bus to watch the Red Devils take on the Tarboro High School Vikings in the 2A State Championship game in Chapel Hill on Friday night.
"I can tell you exactly how many we have so far," Kisser said around 3 p.m. Tuesday. "We have had 220 people buy tickets and have filled up the first charter bus."
When the final bell rang around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, the front office filled with students, many wanting tickets to the game. Kisser planned to man the desk until 6 p.m. Tuesday and every night until Thursday, and wasn't expecting a slow-down.
"It's been steady all day," she said between waiting on students.
Tickets to the game are $9 before the game, $10 at the gate.
The school is organizing a Spirit Bus for students. Riding on that bus costs $15, which includes a ticket to the game.
The charter bus tickets are a little more expensive at $31, but that cost also includes a game ticket. The plans are to charter a second bus through Christian Tours if enough orders come in. With tickets on sale through the high school front office until 6 p.m. Thursday, it's a good bet the second bus will be needed.
School Sports Director Don Patrick said he is not surprised by the reaction.
"The last time we were there, the people at Chapel Hill told me we had the largest crowd they'd ever seen at a championship game," Patrick said. "This community just loves high school football. The people really feel an attraction to this school and that's one thing that makes Newton-Conover special."
In 2000, the Red Devils lost a heartbreaker 14-13 to Southwest Onslow, missing an extra-point attempt that would have tied the game in the last seconds.
The community's affinity for the team should be evident Friday morning when the school will hold a communitywide send-off for the football team at 10:15 a.m. in Gurley Stadium. The school is hoping for a large crowd at the event to show support for the Red Devils.
During the Newton City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Robert Mullinax began the meeting by recognizing the team's upcoming game.
"Let me start by saying, 'Go Red Devils!'" Mullinax said. "It's an exciting time for Newton-Conover and I urge everybody to come to the send-off Friday morning and to Chapel Hill if you can."
Newton-Conover schools will be released early Friday — the high school at 11 a.m.; elementary schools, the Conover School and the ACT Program at 11:30 a.m.; the middle school at 11:45 a.m.; and the Health Science School at noon. According to the school system Web site, the time differences between schools is to better accommodate the busing schedules.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Kenan Stadium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

NEWTON - In only two days, Newton-Conover High School sold 800 tickets to Friday's championship football game.
The school expects to sell the remaining 200 presale tickets it received before school gets out today.
"If people waited until Thursday to get a ticket, they may have waited too long," said Kevin Campbell, principal of Newton-Conover High School. "You'll still be able to get a ticket at the gate — the stadium's really big, so I know they won't run out of seats — but they'll have to pay a higher price for them.":devil2: GO BIG RED!
