Consistency is the ideal...However, the umpire is an important factor in the game. One of the best games my daughter ever pitched I don't think she ever threw a strike. She realized early where she could get the call and took advantage of it. Likewise one of the worst losses I saw her endure was due to an umpire who would not give any calls on moving pitches and only gave called strikes in the center of the plate. It was ugly!!! However he was the one making calls and she could not adapt advantageously to how he called.

Overall the officials I have had the opportunity to see the past couple of years have performed well and are personable. They treat the coaches with respect and are there for the kids. Sure there have been a few missed calls but with the number of games and different venues of play, that is to be expected.

If you want to feel better about the umpires...go watch some of the rec league games. My dd coached a rec team last year. They had one plate ump who closed his eyes and turned his back to the pitcher on every pitch. It was a good lesson for her in maintaining her composure and dealing with the situation.

.....Damn umps! how dare them to wear long polyester pants and all that gear on a 95 degree summer day. And then they call a pitch a ball?!! They must have a problem with "your' strike zone. lol
I've seen many inconsistencies over many years in ALL sports, and one thing for sure is that what is consistent is that officials are trying to call it like they see it, not like momma and daddy see it.

    Oh Boy

Better get used to it, as long as there are games, there will be bad officiating, with crazy strike zones.DD's first collegiate game she pitched in D1, had a terrible zone.I thought okay we're pitching in college, we'll have gooood umps.So it doesn't get any better! Your pitcher will just have to adjust to umps zone, plain & simple. You just have to find out what their zone is, & go with that.Just be thankful when you get a good ump,& make sure to let him know after the game that he did a great job! There are some good ones out there too.Happy Holidays everyone!

Which "leagues"? It really doesn't matter because any league you would happen to mention, YOU would be allowed to umpire yourself. All you have to do is make it happen. And if more parents became the umpires on the field that they are in the stands, instant PERFECTION? Its NOT as easy a task as it's made out to be, from knowledge of the rules, to consistency behind the plate, to hustle in the field & position. Time and experience and the ability to put up with all the ump's in the stands could make a decent umpire.

As your DD's phase out of their playing days, stay involved in the game as a UMPIRE.

One of the biggest problems I have with umpires currently is their reluctance to call illegal pitches (aka crow hops). It seems that it would be ideal to correct issues such as crow hops at the 12U, 14U age levels rather than allowing these problems to fester into 16U and 18U ball. Instead, I consistently see umpires who refuse to address the problem (maybe for fear of upsetting Jayne Dough's father who is an expert because he watches every lesson his daughter takes??).

Why are umpires so reluctant to enforce pitching regulations?

....hard to dispute the inconsistency of umps calling the "crow hop" or re-planting of the "rubber" foot.
But I'll ask this, why wait for an ump to call out what your pitcher is doing wrong? If your pitcher has a problem in a game due to mechanics, don't bitch at the ump. Thats a you problem, not an ump problem.

Some of the umps who call tournament ball are the very same ones calling the small college ranks. Many of them are great guys who just love the game as much as we do. They just take the checks to keep the wives off their backs. My biggest issue has been that some of them really need to retire from behind the plate. They just can't get down anymore.
