Congratulations to Beth Wilson, the shortstop at Watauga. She graduated early, this December, and has committed to play this spring at Walters State Community College. Everyone here in the high country our proud and wish nothing but the best for Beth as she heads to the Morristown, Tn. school.

    different now

this practice of graduating early to enter college in the spring semester seems to be getting fairly common now among sudent athletes. even some non-athletes do it.

    growing up fast.

One reason could be the JUCO has an immediate need and the player could possibly be a starter this year. Not sure of this school's needs, but this could be a reason for entering early. It could be the kid just wants to get out of high school and start enjoying the college life as soon as possible.

....Is Walters a community college or a junior college? No slander, just asking.

Fantastic job you've accomplished Miss Beth by being a great student athlete who could graduate early! Thats awesome!

I believe Walters State is a "community college"...I am not sure if there is a big difference now between community colleges and junior colleges as long as the community college is on the semester system. Perhaps someone could explain the difference. I know that NC community colleges used to be on the quarter system and that was a problem when attempting to transer classes to a 4 year school (semester system). I believe that most community colleges are now on the semester system which should make it easier to transfer to a university.

I think that Walter State is a comminuty college, Tenn. has a lot of those type colleges, they offer several sports, basketball, softball, baseball, ect. no football.
Over the years there program has been quite successful in placing there players in top University's softball programs, one that comes to mind is Western Carolina, I think they have or have had about five players from Walter State.

It is a community college that has athletics that play at the junior college level. They are typically very strong at that level and have several players go on to 4 year colleges. They were 32-16 last season. 337-148 in 10 seasons.

To answer about graduating early, there are several students that graduate early at Watauga for different reasons, one being a chance to get a head start on college. This is the first time the softball program has been impacted as two players graduated early this season, with Beth moving on to play in college.
