I am afraid to ask this question because I got ripped apart in other threads. I am looking for a good OF instructor to work with my daughter. She has a hard problem judging the ball off of the bat and she won't dive for a ball. She has good speed and tries to use that in getting to the ball. She is a good strong outfielder, but as any dad, you want her to be the best. I had Breana Brown (UNC) work with her this past summer and it really strengthend her defense, but Breana never dives either. She taught her to slide and make a catch, but not dive. I have used great hitting instructors (CP Wake Forest and CD Raleigh-Grand Slam), but I am looking for that defensive OF instructor. I am not really looking for a infielder (college student) who is looking to make a few bucks, but someone who has played the position who can teach and motivate. Any suggestions. We live in the Durham area.

dont be afraid of getting ripped trooper, happens to the best of us. here is how i taught our infielders and outfielders to dive.

start out with an old mattress and have them dive on this, softens the impact and gives them confidence while they learn to turn their body sideways and stretch out for the ball.

next step, replace mattress with some foam rubber, 2" deep and do the same drills.

next step take it down to 1" and finally, soft grass. this process went on over a two week period and they all learned how to take the impact and come up with the ball.

    hope it helps

    Dive

Cheese has some great suggestions, we have them get down on their knees and then we pitch the ball to either side and have them lay out for ball. After that, we pitch over their shoulders and have them lay out for ball, then short and same concept. It gets them used to laying out for ball on turf so the fear can go away, then you can start with them in crouched position gradually working into a jog and dive etc. Sorry we are not in your area my daughter was a college outfielder and dove a great deal and actually worked with my travel teams on diving, they did it for her no problem, haha.
