Just got an email from a friend making me aware of yet another tragedy that has befallen one of my former rec league players. It got me to thinking about how many of of these things had happened to kids I coached o my son played against. These kids are between 21 and 24, and here is the list:

    2 suicides
1 murdered in fight over a girl
    1 killed in car crash
1 gang shooting/shot five times but survived
this latest one was a 4-wheeler crash resulting in permanent paralysis

Pretty amazing number. Life is short.....play hard!

It's frightening to think about all the negative things that happen all around us. We just have to keep plugging along trying to set good examples, let them know we care, and teach them to make good decisions and be careful. You never know when something you do or say will stick with them and make a positive impact on their lives.

I work in a public school, and as a daily reminder, my school keychain has a tag that says, "Life is short....PRAY hard!" (Yeah, despite what the courts may say, there is always prayer is public schools. Folks just don't hear it.)

Another interesting tidbit about each and every one of those kids. All were above average players which is why I remember them. But not one single one of them ever played beyond JV baseball. Several dropped out and the others just found what they considered more fun things to do. I can't help but wonder if they had chosen differently if some of them couldn't have been saved.

We won't ever know why some things happen. We are all vulnerable. But it always is more tragic when it is a young person. I have always told my baseball player son since he was very young to make sure he keeps his eye on the ball and God in his game and he will never lose. Some things can be predicted and some things can't and some things we will never know. We should all pray hard for all our young people.

    Interesting Comparision

I remember a few years back seeing a study that correlated teenage pregnancy, or something along those lines against participating in athletics for female athletes.

It would come as no surprise that those students that were active in sports had higher self-esteem and confidence and had lower incidents of whatever it was studied...

That is one of the great things about sports - it is a great outlet for young people to be active... as the old saying goes, "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop..."
