Grant “Bam-Bam’ Cain is a sophomore at Terry Sanford High School. One of the first things you notice about Grant is his size. He is BIG!! I mean HUGE! Grant is 6’5” and 250 lbs. and is still growing. How do I know? Because he wears a size 19 shoe…a 19!! His Doctor believes he will grow to 6’9”. Now, can you imagine by the time he is a senior at 6’9”, weighing around 265 and having to face him as a batter or pitcher? No sir…I’m taking that day off. Grant won our HR Derby and so I wanted to interview Grant to get to know him a little better.

First of all, congratulations on winning the TBR HR Derby. There were a lot of great hitters competing and to come out on top is something to be proud of. How did you like participating in the All Skills event at Providence HS?

I really enjoyed this camp. There was a whole lot of instruction going, on and what made it better was that all the guys working with us definitely knew what they were doing and had a lot of passion for what they were teaching, and I think it makes people learn better especially me when you and the person teaching you has the same amount of passion for the game as you do.

Whenever somebody first meets you, they will be amazed with your size, but you are a very athletic player. Do you play other sports?

Basketball/ Track/ Swimming for baseball conditioning

You are also an outstanding pitcher. Which do you prefer: Pitching or playing a position?

I would have to say playing a position, although I am really beginning to like pitching. But I’ve always been a hitter it’s always been my strong part of my game. I've always liked to be in the box when the game is on the line.

You have a maturity that is rarely seen for someone your age. Where and how did you learn that?

I've always heard that I am very mature for my age, and where I learned that from was being brought up right by my Mom and Dad.

Have you set goals for yourself and for Terry Sanford HS baseball team this year?

Well my goal for my High School is to make playoffs this year. It has been a long time since we have made the playoffs. We should have better chance this year.

Who is the competition in your conference this year?

Southview and Cape Fear. These two teams always make the playoffs and normally go fairly deep in the tournament

If you had to explain who Grant Cain is to a stranger, what would you say?

I would say im a good person because I am driven to my goals and surround myself with good people.

What do you like to do on your days off?

Fishing with my dad and grandpa, and sitting down at the house and watching baseball games the times im not at the field

    What is your favorite dinner?

    Mexican Food

Outside of baseball, what are your hobbies?

fishing, basketball with dad, and joking around with friends

Who has been the biggest influence in your baseball career?

My dad and I have always gone to the fields back since tee-ball to practice for hours. Even though some times we would butt heads we would always learn something about each other. Freddy Suggs, I really appreciate him taking me on the anglers as a freshman he taught me a lot about the game. Also Derick Graham with Athletes Choice Batting Center in Fayetteville. He has an indoor facility that I am at about every day. Lastly Starsky Norman who I just started working with that has help me a lot with hitting

Do you have certain colleges in mind that you are interested in?

Carolina because they have an awesome program with top notch players

Is there a particular athlete that you admire?

Cal Ripkin Jr. he was truly an ironman because the desire he had to play in all the games that he did

What have your parents meant to you?

THE MOST IN THE WORLD! They sacrifice a lot to help me pursue my dreams and goals and that really means a lot. They could be doing their own things but they love me enough to give up those things for me.

Is there anything you would like to say to our members on TBR?

GREAT CAMP. I really enjoyed it a lot and got to meet a lot of new people and got to see a lot of familiar faces. I can’t wait till the next camp.

I had the opportunity to coach Grant at a fall camp. I can tell you he is a lot of fun to coach. He always has a positive attitude and is super competitive, but he balances his makeup with maturity. I couldn’t believe he is only a sophomore. It’s going to be fun to watch him develop in the next few years. With hard work (something I know he will do), Grant can become one of the best players to come out of NC.

Grant Cain is a great kid.

Once saw this kid playing third base as a 11 or 12 year old. Our player had made it to 3rd. Grant was there on the bag with him. Grant patted our player on the top of the head as Grant was about 3 ft taller than him. It was kinda funny to see the size difference. But the thing I remember most was that Grant was patting our player on the head like someone would smack someone on the back side for a good play. It was Grants way of saying, "Good Job making it to 3rd!"

Our kid was terrified to get to 3rd but Grant just did what any good sportsman would. Just gave props to the other guy for making a good play.

    Grant

We have known this "kid" since he was 11 yo. My son played against the team he was on in Little League. Good all around kid.
Can't wait to see Grant in the future...I believe that once all the pieces come together he will be a player to watch.
