The newspaper article states: "Terry Moffitt, Veritas' national superintendent, said teachers and administrators have not been paid in full since November." Posts on this board mentioned the failure to pay teachers -- but not coaches. Does anyone know if the school has continued to pay athletic staff members? If so, that would raise a question about the school's commitment to academics.

The news story also mentions that the Academy may seek "public grants." I hope not. Especially because of the budgetary problems facing state and local governments, public money should not be invested in this unique private enterprise.

Just a thought....when donations are made, sometime they are made to a 'specific area' and cannot be used anywhere else. Example...in my church, if I make a contribution to the 'building fund'... the money has to go there and cannot be spent on salaries, heating, missions, etc. By law...it has to go to the building fund.

I would imagine the same thing to be true at Veritas. If the donors specified that their dollars be used for athletics, then that would be where the money would have to stay.

I would think that if the coaches are still being paid and the teachers are not, that would say more about the priorities of the donors and their ability/willingness to follow through on their commitments than the priorities of the school itself.

I think it may be rumor that teachers are not getting paid and coaches are.

First the News and Record article did not report the facts accurately. No games have been altered except the Puerto Rico trip. All other games have been played as scheduled. The reason the basketball team is going to be playing close to home is because most of their remaining games are home. Good reason not to travel if you ask me.

Two students that left moved out of the area from what I understand.

Designated money from individuals that is to be used for athletic travel must be used for athletic travel. Coaches have been paid on the same basis as teachers. One major fact not reported in the newspaper is that over $70,000 has been paid to teachers and coaches in benevolence money that will not be applied to their back pay. This was paid from gifts to help with mortgages, car payments, etc. Health insurance has been paid up and is current.

The administrators at the school have tried and in most cases met all or most of the needs of the teachers and coaches, so when you say they haven't been paid, they have received money. Teachers were offered an opportunity months ago to leave if necessary and they would receive back pay plus a positive recommendation. If they opted to stay they did it by choice.

Academics have not been watered down. In fact, the staff that has stepped in to replace teachers is more qualified than the teachers that quit and all have teaching certificates. I was told that one staff has 30 years of teaching experience and stepped in for a teacher that had 3 years of experience. Not too bad. One has had college teaching experience.

Once again I ask you to look at the positives in all of this. Academics and athletics have not been compromised. School will continue on according to the parents I have talked to. Most are extremely positive and encouraged. I am going to go out and watch the basketball team play its home games so I can witness first hand the determination of Veritas Sports Academy.

    Once again...Go Veritas!

    Veritas

For those of you wondering and accusing parents of making decisions about attending Veritas for their sons, in our case we allowed our son to make his own decision. It has turned out to be much more than we ever bargained for. Out son's spiritual growth has been alarming! Whether or not he never played baseball again would be OK with us. He has found himself and developed a relationship with God, along with receiveing a fabulous education thus far. If those of you who choose to bash the school and its' mission only saw first hand how it has changed the 50 boys who currently attend, you would not be worrying about whether they should or should not be allowed to retun to their home schools if the need arises If they have to go back, I can assure you they will be returning as players with the character and morals that any parent would be happy to have sitting next to their son in the dugout.

It has truly been a blessed experience, with God and family first, academics second, and baseball third. I hope those that love to see our boys do well, whether it be in public or private schools, will pray for all our sons and players out there. I for one LOVE to see a name I know who has made it to a good college, or pitched a great game, no matter where he has done it!

My wish is that the school will suceed and go on to offer many more students and athletes the experience to grow as it has done for many boys at Veritas. The boys want desperately to stay. Please pray for them.

I am praying for the boys and thankful to hear the positive coming from Veritas. We tend to forget the importance of baseball in the big scheme of things.

I would much rather see great young men than great baseball players!
