My son has a developed a bad habit of hitting off his front foot, he's out of balance. Does anyone have some tips and drills for me to do with him that might correct this? Thanks in advance!

often times it is best to get him some lessons with a pro. He'll listen to them and you both can learn...

the best advice I remember about keeping your weight back was from Chip Smith, when he was coaching at Campbell... he said "Put your front foot down easy, like you're steppin' in a fresh cow pattie!"

hope this thread doesn't go into linear vs rotational... that just makes my head hurt!

Stand him on a tire and throw BP. If he is too heavy on front foot, he will be extremely off balance and will actually feel the lose of power and probably the first couple of times fall off. He is also probably dropping his hands. Fix that first by having him step to and back to the pitcher but keeping his hands up at all times without throwing BP. He will learn to adjust to off speed. Hope that helps.

    Understanding

You must first understand that there many things that make up a hitter's style, but there are only two true mechanical hitting philosophies. They are of course "linear" and "rotational". You must first identify which fits you best and then work on drills that promote success with that philosophy. The biggest problem I see with hitting advice most of the times (all be it with good intentions) is that it is counter productive because of a true lack of understanding from the hitter and alot of times the one giving the advice.
