I know this will very seldom if ever happen, but if you are an invited walk-on who redshirts as a freshman, do you count against the 35 max roster limit your freshman academic year at a D1 school? Now that's a wordy question!

I do not think a walkon redshirt counts against the 35

    i don't

think so, necessarily. The parents and kids who read threads on "baseball" are looking for info about recruiting so that they can hopefully get to "the next level". I know when we were going thru the process, I found very valuable info on this portion of the site - much of which helped us make important decisions......

Even though we technically belong to "the next level" now, I still come back to "baseball" to see what's going on.....

    still a great site

According to the NCAA, if you're listed on the roster, you count.

I was surprised to learn (I think this is right) that when a D1 player transfers from one D1 school to another D1, they have to sit out a year, but don't lose eligibility - they still have the same # of remaining years to play. Maybe the year they sit out is considered their "red shirt" year, I don't know.... I had assumed that they would lose a year of playing eligibility.... of course, they still have the costs to bear associated with attending school the year that they are not able to play..

Depends. Scholarship players are deemed on the roster as soon as they set foot on campus. Non-scholarship players are not on the roster until it is finalized the day prior to the first game, Feb. 19th. So, if you are a walk on who is never listed on the roster you don't count against the 35. But you aren't technically a redshirt.

However, if you are placed on the final roster, but never play, you are deemed a redshirt. There is no form or anything that confirms redshirting. Either you play or you don't. At any rate, once you're on the final roster you continue to count for the rest of the season, whether you play or not, or if you get hurt.

A kid who attempts to walk-on, but does not make the team, and transfers to another D1 school must still sit out a year before he can play. Under NCAA rules you have 5 years to play 4 seasons. A player that attempted to walk-on would lose 1 of the 5 years his freshman year at School 1, and a second year while sitting out a year at school 2. He would have 3 years of eligibility remaining at School 2.

I called the NCAA today to get their take. I was told a player won't count towards the 35-man roster limit as long as he doesn't practice with the team as a roster player would. If you are on the field practicing reguarly with the team, you have to count against the roster limit, even as a walk-on redshirt. So what point is it to redshirt if you can't workout and practice with the team. In this case you would still have four years of eligibility remaining.
