Runner on third with 1 out, pitcher pitches ball in the dirt, ball takes bad bounce hits the umpire, umpire trips and falls on ball. Catcher can not retrieve the ball because umpire is laying on ball. Runner @ third scores. Does run count ??

    Maybe Not

Not necessarily in this case. If a ball becomes lodged in an umpires equipment/slash uniform it is a dead ball and base runners return to where they were at the start of the pitch. IMO, I think this could be ruled this way in this instance.

I just had this vision of a catcher holding her hands up like an outfielder who sees the ball go under or become lodged in the fence!

    But !!

Ball was not lodged, but I see your point !! TBR's giving good answers, just goes to show that people have either been there or know the game !!

No matter what, this is turning out bad for the umpire. Hopefully the catcher, pitcher, and 3rd baseman didn't pile on him in an attempt to get the ball, or heaven forbid, try to kick the ball out. Maybe trying to exact some justice.
