Batter hits line drive off the center field fence. Center fielder runs ball down and ball bounces off fence comes back and she unintentionally kicks it over the fence. What's the rule?

    Depends...

did the ball hit the ground after hitting the fence?

    to kill the suspense...

If it landed on her foot without touching the ground and she kicked it over... Home Run.

If it bounced on the ground first, 2 base award (aka Ground Rule Double).

Ball did bounce before being kicked.

I actually think you could give the runner third if it's deemed the runner was already at first when the ball was kicked out of play. On the assumption the ball hit the ground.

Wouldn't this be treated the same as if a hard hit grounder glanced off an infielders glove the rolled into the dugout? It wouldn't be a ground rule double. I think it should be ruled as any ball that is touched by a fielder then goes into dead ball territory. The old rule "one base from the rubber, two from the field" comes into play here when a ball is hit or thrown into dead ball territory after touching a fielder.

    Just my thinking.

If the ball went out of bounds on its own... ie rolled under the fence or through a crack in the fence, then I can see the ground rule double. Since a player actually made contact with the ball, why is this any different than a ball thrown into a dugout? The end result might be the same but does it fall under the ground rule double rule? What if the runner had made it to 2nd when the ball was accidentally kicked out?

    Uh... (Oops)

ASA just changed the rules this year to clear this up (some)... if it goes off the wall, then off a player, then over the fence... is now a two-base award from time of pitch (I stand corrected on my earlier post, it is NOT a home run. The rule is 8.5.I). If it just touches a player, then goes over the fence, it is a home run (in fast pitch).

If the fielder INTENTIONALLY kicked the ball, then it becomes 2 bases from last base touched. (8.5.K)

I don't have a current NFHS book to check their rules.
