    Hickory vs Patton

    Hickory 7
    Patton 6

Barnette and Christopher pitched great for Hickory. It was a great team effort for Hickory after being down 6-1 to come away with a road win.

Good high school baseball game between cross town rivals!
Jake Strickland hit HR #9 and has 26 RBI's

Fike's Mitchell Wheeler made some nice plays at 3B, one being a line drive missle hit by J. Strickland.

Hunt Soph. Chess Lamm relieved starter Jacob Hackney and pitched well for the Warriors with Jake Strickland picking up the win in relief of Lamm in the 7th

Good Luck to both teams in Conf. play on Tues.

    Hunt vs. Fike

No matter what level in baseball, the two most dreaded words in baseball will always come back to haunt you. WALKS & ERRORS.

Hunt makes theirs in the 1st inning that leads to Fike's first 4 runs.

Fike makes theirs in the 7th inning which leads to Hunts last 4 runs. Game over!

Two things that stand out to me about that game.

The first is Jake Strickland is a man! I stood beside him the other night making an informal recruiting pitch for American Legion Post 13 and must say I was a bit intimidated. He is strong and can hit a baseball extremely hard! HIs numbers speak for themselves.

The other is Mitchell Wheeler is a player. He looked like Brooks Robinson at 3rd base last night. I've been around Fike for a few years now, don't currently have a son playing, and will give you an objective opinion of a player. Overall; hitting, fielding, pitching, base runing, sportsmanship, humility, being a good team mate, and good student, Mitchell Wheeler is Fike's best player.

That ought to ruffle some feathers!!!

    Anybody disagree?

Grayben, your words about Mitchell are appreciated. I get uncomfortable talking about who is the best on a team. There are several on Fike's team having really good years so far. Tripp Sauls, Russell Ward, , & David Gibbons, just to mention a few.
Your comments about Jake Strickland are right on. He's a weapon of mass destruction. In a league of his own. I certainly hope he plays legion. Of course, errors, will doom any team. Why is it that alot of players work so hard on their pitching & hitting, but don't put in the necessary fielding work? Connor Narron is the best high-school shortstop I've seen this year and it's because he works hard at it. He works to get better & it shows.
Getting back to the Hunt-Fike game, you had 2 good teams going at it. Hunt is one victory away from making my top 10 poll (that would be beating E.Wayne tonight). Tough assignment! Also, they have C.B. Aycock Friday. Tough week!

Certainly don't want to make you uncomfortable, but it is what it is!

He would look really good in a royal blue college uniform!!

You are right about working at fielding, etc.

Another lost art is bunting. Seen a lot of blown bunting opportunites this year on high school and college level.

It's the missed ground ball with runners in scoring position and 2 outs that always seem to beat you.

And of course if the runners in scoring position got there as a result of being walked hurts even worse!

    My biggest pet peeve---

would be situational hitting. Runners on 1st & 2nd, no outs, & no attempt to move them over. Runners end up not scoring. Also, runner on 3rd, 1 out or less, & the batter can't put the ball in play to score that runner. I've seen it so many times this year that I'm getting sick of it. Good baseball players know how to get it done. It's an art. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, at the end of a low scoring contest.

Lot of stranded runners. East Meck had bases loaded twice and couldn't get a run across. Weddington stranded bases loaded once.

Leighton Daniels hit a lead off double in the first and scored to put EM up 1-0

Brad Collins 3 run HR in 3rd put Weddington up 3-1 to stay.
Payden Honeycutt also homered for Weddington
Clay Tresher Winning pitcher and also had a 2 RBI single

Our apologies to the EM fans for not having the same atmosphere at our park as we did at theirs. Our mixer was broken and our announcer out of town. Suppose we could have pulled out the grill at least.
