I need some input from some of the experts here.
I was at a girls high school game when the batter hit a pop up between home and 1st base. There was 2 runners on base. The ball was clearly in foul territory and the home plate umpire called, "infield fly, batter is out". I started to question the call when other parents in the stands looked at me as if I was stupid, saying the umpires can call the infield fly rule on foul balls. I took it as learning something that I did not know. Now some others have told me that you cannot call the infield fly rule when the ball is clearly in foul territory. I have seen it called on a pop up in the infield where the wind blew it foul. Does anyone know the rule here?

the purpose of the infield fly rule is to stop the possibility of a purposeful dropping of the ball by a fielder to set up a double play. If the ball was in foul territory this would not apply.

I have heard "Infield Fly if Fair" announced.
There is no infield fly on a foul ball.

I am an umpire. The ball has to be caught in FAIR territory. The umpire should call "In field fly if fair". The purpose of this rule is to keep the defense from dropping a fly ball for the purpose of doubling up the runners.

We had an umpire say that the ball had to be fair and go past the pitching rubber. Is this right? The ball was hit straight up in the air to the pitcher and was blown back toward home plate.

Reminds me of T-Ball where they paint a line 10 feet out and say the ball has to roll past it to be fair.
Guru is right, infield is ALL that area inside the 4 bases, oh and a resonable distance beyond.
A ball popped up between pitchers mound and home plate? Most catchers and pitchers I know could gun down the lead runner and quite possibly turn the dreaded double play that "infield fly" rule is designed to prevent.
