    3A Eastern Playoffs:

The 3A Eastern playoffs officially got started last night with West Carteret topping Currituck 10-1.
Tonight, Southern Wayne travels to Rocky Mount to take on the Gryphons.

My favorite to win the East is Rocky Mount.

Rocky Mount has the best pitching in the East. Hobbs Johnson, Benton Moss, Nick Hahula, Dillon Cockrell, & company have only given up 37 runs
all season. That's better than last years Rocky Mount team. They've pitched 6 shut-outs. In 16 of their 21 games this year they have allowed 2 points or less. It's hard to beat Rocky Mount if you can't score. Their leadoff guy is Brian Goodwin, probadly the best table -setter in the East as well. When Goodwin gets on base, Rocky Mount's all-time rbi man Ben Fish usually brings him in.
After Rocky Mount & Eastern Wayne the East is wide open. Expect alot of close games & alot of upsets. Several teams have at least 1 pitcher that can keep their team in any game. We know of course that Rocky Mount & Eastern Wayne will have to meet in the 3rd round so one of the favorites will not make it to the Eastern Finals.

Rocky Mount 4 Southern Wayne 1

WP: Hobbs Johnson (7 innings, 14 strikeouts, 6 hits, 1 HP, 0 walks)
    LP: Michael Douglas

    Hitting:
RM: Brian Goodwin (2-3, 1 run)
    RM: Michael Whitehead (2-4)
RM: Collins Cuthrell (1-2, Rbi sac fly)
    RM: Ben Fish (1-4,Rbi)
    RM: Thomas Berry (1-2)
    RM: Parker Helms (1-3)
RM: Chris Pittman (pitch-hit home run)
RM: Carter Varnell (2-3, 2 runs)
    SW: Jordan Williams (1-3, Rbi)
    SW: Tyler Edwards (1-2)
    SW: Keenan Winn (1-3)
    SW: Zach Grantham (2-3)

Rocky Mount scored 2 runs in the 5th & 2 in the 6th to ease past a scappy Southern Wayne squad. Douglas held the Gryphons scoreless until the 5th when Varnell beat out a infield hit, & Goodwin and Whitehead both had bunt singles to load the bases. Cuthrells sac fly & Fish's rbi single put Rocky Mount in the lead. Johnson escaped a bases-loaded 1-out situation in the top of the 3rd by striking out the final 2 batters. Chris Pittman had his 3rd pitch-hit home run of the year!
