I wanted to start a thread to get input on peoples thoughts on illegal pitches. I believe that if a pitcher throws an illegal pitch it should be called. For whatever reason it isn't happening until the playoffs. It should be called if it is illegal. Shame on them for not calling it during the season though. The illegal pitch (crow hop and leap) has been a point of emphasis for 2 years in a row now. It also says that if an umpire isn't calling it they are doing a disservice to the game. I firmly believe that umpires should go by the book and not even let a pitcher hop and inch. What is you guys views?

Agreed..... when every field is maintained without a dip or hole in front of the pitcher's plate.

The book clarifies if there is a hole then the foot may leave the ground if it would have stayed in contact. In my opinion and the way I take that is that if the foot comes higher than the rubber then illegal pitch.

    Rules

You have to know the rules before you can call them.
I have been told by HS umps the whole ball has to cross the plate to be a strike, she gets to take an extra step to plate, she's a girl, a girl can't make a softball break, there is no such thing as a rise ball etc. call slappers out for being out of the box when the box was not properly laid out, some just use a bat to judge from home plate! It's hard to take a HS ump serious when you have that kind of crap being uttered during a game. It's an insult to all the girls who put so much time into the sport! Most HS umps are calling Little League baseball Monday, Dixie Softbal on Saturday and don't know much about the how an acomplished pitcher throws in FP! lNO WONDER SOME MANY HS LEAGUES ARE FOLDING AROUND THE US!
If a pitcher is playing HS & TB from January until November and never get an illegal call, I'd say they are whithin the rules, they don't give you much slack in the big college showcases. So these umps in the first round are not a very good gauge for who is legal and who is not!
Ever watch Finch or Osterman, legal or not, if illegal let's go back re-invent the sport. How about the srtike zone, if it's from the knees to the letters, then it's knees to the letters. Every ump every pitcher, every batter. You can nit pick a rule to the point of stupidity. Does the infraction give a clear advantage to the pitcher, if yes call it! What if basketball rules were called to the letter, bye bye NBA!

Why not just let them pitch and play a simple and uncluttered game.

Most ump's have had trouble calling balls and strikes and save and outs. I don't think they know what an illegal pitch is or base runners leaving early.

First of all, I will say that a most of the umpires at the lower levels do not know the difference between a "Crow Hop" and a "Leap". Cat Osterman, who I admire a lot and have worked numerous camps with, will admit that she "Leaps". Monica Abbott would slide her foot about 4 inches in front of the pitching rubber. A crow hop is the replanting of the pivot foot some distance in front of the pitching rubber prior to the release of the pitch. A leap is when the lead or non-pivot foot lands, with the pivot foot clearly off of the ground, not dragging the toe, prior to the release of the pitch. I personally believe that these are the illegal pitches that should be called. The rest of the defined illegal pitches in the book are strictly mechanical and gain the pitcher absolutely no advantage whatsoever. i also am of the belief of letting the ladies decide the outcome of games.
As for why these violations are more readily called in college showcase tournaments, is the fact that in most of these tournaments, not all, there are a large group of DI and DII collegiate officials there calling the games. But for the most part, until coaches and pitching instructors, who are with these girls all the time, correct the issue, then it will continue to be a problem.

    leap/hop?

is there video somewhere online that shows these violations?

and what advantage do they give?

and i will qualify - i AM a baseball person trying to learn the differences. even if i never ump again, knowing the rules helps my photography get better (ie knowing the balk rule helps know when the pitcher is going home or pick off move in baseball)
